APR 20, 15 .. CAP AND PATTI .. ENJOYING HONG KONG .. PART 3 OF 10

Yesterday .. Sunday April 19th .. we two .. Patti and myself .. rode three ferries to three places in the Greater Hong Kong Metro Area. Our trips took us to Lantau Island .. Lamma Island .. and across Victoria Harbor from Hong Kong to Kowloon.

May we all lift a resounding roar-of-applause for Andrej my webmaster par excellence and for the maps below that Andrej taught me how to utilize!

Lantau Island is the largest of the Hong Kong Islands.

The balloon in the below map points to the Hong Kong Airport.

To begin this Post I am going to show you the three ferries.

The first photos will show the ferry to Discovery Bay over on Lantau Island.

Do all of you see Lantau Island and Discovery Bay located off to the left of Hong Kong in the map above?

“You don’t ‘Zilla? Put on your reading glasses ‘Zilla! Is that better?”

This is the ferry that took us to Discovery Bay the community located on the Eastern Side of Lantau Island.

Discovery Bay is a ‘bedroom-community’ of wealthy members of Hong Kong Society. As a result the Discovery Bay Ferry is upscale.

When Patti and I returned to Hong Kong we then boarded another ferry that took the two of us to Lamma Island.

Andrej! These maps are just outstanding!

Photos of the ferry to Lamma Island now follow those above of the ferry to Lantau Island.

Lamma Island is down to the left and below Hong Kong in the above map.

The ferry down to Lamma Island is much more of a ‘working-class’ ferry! It is just a Teeny Weeny Itsy Bitsey Down-And-Dirty.

Oh Come On You Loyal Followers! THIS IS HONG KONG! We are NOT alone! Can you spot Patti on the right?

DSCN1561[1]

Our last ferry ride was on one of our beloved Star Ferries!

Nothing fancy here .. just the Star Ferry run from Hong Kong Central across Victoria Harbor to Kowloon.

I snapped the above photo on a Star Ferry. The wisdom and the peace of the ages seemed to me to be shown in his Asian face.

Now to some photos of Lantau and Lamma Islands.

LANTAU ISLAND AND DISCOVERY BAY ..

The local people in Hong Kong call Discovery Bay simply ‘DB’..

Patti and I went over to Lantau Island and Discovery Bay in particular to attend a morning meeting. So we did not DO ‘DB’ per se!

As I noted above .. Discovery Bay is on the upscale side of things. The Lonely Planet Guide gives only one scant mention of Discovery Bay in its Hong Kong edition.

A few random photos of Discovery Bay.

‘DB’ is modern .. clean .. spotless to a fault .. and fairly ‘reeks’ of money! And is most certainly is ‘Nice Enough’!

LAMMA ISLAND AND SOK KWU WAN ..

The balloon in the below map shows you the general area of Sok Kwu Wan.

Lamma Island has two very separate and two very distinctly different communities. I plan to do a post just on Lamma Island so I will not go too deeply into the two communities here except to name the second community .. YUNG SHUE WAN.

In the below map .. YUNG SHUE WAN is the top left balloon.

SOK KWU WAN is the lower right balloon.

‘Zilla I can NOT answer your question asking me “Why are you going into all of this detail Cap?”

SOK KWU WAN is primarily a small fishing village loaded with an over abundance of fishing oriented restaurants.

DSCN1580[1]

All of them .. each and every single one of them .. are basically seafood restaurants!

DSCN1571[1]

DSCN1572[1]

Sok Kwu Wan is a very small village! There is a footpath connecting Sok Kwu Wan to Yung Shue Wan. The walk takes approximately 90 minutes.

DSCN1573[1]

In the above and below photos as you look across the harbor .. the footpath heads off to the right.

My one photo snapped amidst the seafood restaurants.

We sign off .. Both Smiling with Joy .. Patti and Cap ..

AND NOW??

A very nice .. A very special .. Story.

Patti has trouble with her hip and with her back. As a result it can be very uncomfortable for Patti to stand on her feet for long periods of time. When we were waiting to board the ferry to Lamma Island we encountered a fifteen to twenty minute wait.

What is IS and we have a slick cane that also has a small seat for Patti to rest upon.

DSCN1614[1]

Let me tell you all .. THIS LITTLE ‘RIG’ IS BEYOND BEAUTIFUL!

DSCN1615[1]

Patti had just begun to think about opening up her seat-cane when ..

OUT OF THE BLUE UP RACED A MAN WHO OFFERED PATTI HIS CHAIR TO SIT UPON!

Patti gracefully accepted his offer and ..

BEHIND HIM CAME HIS LADY WITH HER CHAIR FOR ME TO SIT UPON.

I could not talk her out of her chair .. I pointed to Patti’s little seat-cane and she insisted I use her chair which I gracefully accepted.

Time for boarding came and we all boarded the ferry.

Once we two were settled into our seats on the ferry .. I told Patti .. “I am going to go over to the gentleman and Thank Him and give him $100 HKG as well.”

Which I did. He would NOT take my money. I said .. “Please .. use it to pay forward to someone else in need!” .. to no avail.

So I hailed Patti to come over and to join us .. the man and his two lady friends. We all sat together on the ride to Lamma Island.

VINNIE FROM NEW YORK .. OUR NEW ‘COUSIN VINNIE’ .. THERE HAS TO BE A SPECIAL PLACE AWAITING YOU WHEN THIS LIFE IS OVER!

VINNIE! YOU ARE .. D’ MAN!

I wish I had gotten one of your business cards!
