THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE * ..

VERNAL SPRING EQUINOX 2016 

Occurred here in Ulaanbaatar at 12:30PM ULAT today Sunday the 20th of March 2016.

Spring Has Sprung !

* I must mention that it is the NORTHERN HEMISPHERE VERNAL EQUINOX because in the Southern Hemisphere it is the Autumn or the AUTUMNAL EQUINOX !

I am NOT going to go into the fact that Ulaanbaatar’s time zone ULAT (ULAST for the summer) is UTC + 8 hours and that UTC means Universal Coordinated Time and why it is UTC and not UCT and that GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) is no longer what-it-once-was and now is but a mere-time-zone and what precisely the Equinox is and why its time and day varies from year-to-year and (taking a quick breath) “Yes Patti I meant for this to be a very long sentence.” and now I ask all of you Today’s Rhetorical Question.

TODAY’S RHETORICAL QUESTION :  I wonder IF Wikipedia and its phenomenal and never ending complex and informational reservoir has ever pushed anyone ‘over the edge’ regarding their mental stability! 

“Where is our Captain?” .. “Wikipedia overwhelmed him and he’s over in the corner humming away as he recites The Dinkey Bird to himself!”

I number among my followers a few who understand .. Who REALLY UNDERSTAND .. What I am talking about.

Today Spring means we began the day at – 8C / 17F and got to 8C / 47F just in case you were wondering.

I closed yesterday’s post with the statement that :

Tomorrow Sunday the 20th I’ll go back to this same location for a 6pm to 8pm meeting.

I did and all went well with the meeting. I have to say 2-hour meetings are 1-hour too long. But that is the custom here in Mongolia.

DSCN0160[1]When I saw what you are seeing here I thought to myself .. “This looks like a war-zone!”
DSCN0161[1]Looking at the left edges of the below photos you can see that the tree-trimmers had not finished their dastardly deeds!

DSCN0143[1]In the above and below photos the one man looks like he is standing on the roof of the building.
DSCN0144[1]The below photo snapped from the other side and looking back shows he is clearly in the tree and not on the roof of the above building.
DSCN0151[1]The work crew seemed to know what they were doing. No amateur should be up in a tree supporting yourself with your legs while you are using a chain saw!

I wonder if the below couple are just making hay while the sun shines. They do not look too official.

In closing I don’t know whether to feel sorry for the poor trees or happy for them. They look so ‘forlorn’ to me! I was planning to come back in a month or so to see them gloriously happy and budding out. Maybe they will be budding out and that this is all part of the process to stimulate the trees to push out new branches.

    OUCH !!! The tree trimming looks to have left those trees in pain! The “normal time” for tree and shrub trimming is, I think, in the fall, so that in the spring the trees can just concentrate on putting out new shoots, buds and leaves. It does not seem to me that new leaves are going to cover up this carnage. Just sayin’ … A rueful smile … Patti

      OUCH !! That says it all M’ Dear One. I am not able to fathom how these trees will recover from such severe pruning. Who knows maybe this is a first step in removing the trees. Love ..

    I would hope the tree trimmers know what they’re doing but I agree with Patti that fall is the correct time to do cutting.

    It does look like a war zone with butchered limbs scattered everywhere. Am I making it all even more morbid that it really is?

      Shaddy Oh Shaddy .. It looked JUST ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE .. There is no way you are making anything worse than it actually is. You can see how forlorn and morbid it looked in the two specific photos that I called it looking like a war zone. Thanks for checking in Shaddy ..

    Relax, be happy! This is from the Arbor Day Foundation:

    Pruning a tree in late winter gets the tree ready for tremendous growth in the spring, according to the foundation. If robust growth is not desired, then pruning another time may be best. Summer pruning works to correct defects that have become visible and to limit current growth, such as that of unwanted or too-long branches. Trees with flowers blooming in spring should be pruned when the flowers wither, and trees with flowers blooming between middle and late summer should be pruned in winter or early spring. Trees should not be pruned in the fall.

    Some trees, however, have specific requirements as to pruning.

    Looks to me like the pruners : 1) were gainfully employed, 2) providing a source of firewood, 3) keeping the trees from growing too large for an urban setting, 4) removing any cracked or broken branches that might be a liability.

      I am going to work this entire comment into a future post when I re-visit the trees and see how they are doing later in the spring. You are a never ending source of knowledge and wisdom. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH..
