OCT 30, 14 .. ONE NEW HAMPSHIRE ‘BEACH’ ..
As Patti and I were driving North on coastal Highway 1A through New Hampshire a few weeks ago .. I said to Patti ..
“Let’s turn off here and see what we can see of the beach.”
“What’s that Trucker Tom? You want more details of where we were!”
Tom, we were just North of Hampton Beach and just South of Rye, New Hampshire.
Now all of you can join Patti and I in seeing what we discovered!
What we saw was NOT immediately visible from Highway 1A because of an elevated rocky area between the highway and the beach.
As you will see in the photos below .. what we discovered was a literal forest of .. for lack of a better descriptive term .. Neanderthal Rock Monuments.
THANK YOU GULLIBLE (see comments below) for advising us that these are Rock Cairns. You can ‘Google’ the term!
ROCK CAIRN ..
1.) a pile of stones erected to define a path or mark a memorial.
Rock cairns are a popular way of marking or defining a trail/route above tree line. Below tree line, dead trees, trees with flags, etc. can be used to define a path, but above tree line the best natural resource is rock. By arranging a pile of stones, a marker (rock cairn) can be constructed which is visible from some distance away. By following rock cairns above tree line, the impact to the high alpine tundra can be minimized or controlled.
2.) Cairn: a small rough-haired breed of terrier (from Scotland).

Those rock cairns are a more environmentally-pleasing way of saying “Kilroy was here.”
I like like your term rock cairns better than Neanderthal Rock Monuments! Thanks for your insight! I also struggled with a term for the rocky area between the highway and the beach that prevented drivers from seeing this section of the beach. I called it a glacial-like moraine but Patti would not approve of this wordy term.
I didn’t know those were called cairns either! They are very, very awesome. Whoever assembled them, knew what they were doing. I can’t help but wonder how long they’ve been along the shoreline. When we were in Door County earlier this month, we saw a single cairn which was about a foot and a half high. It was there one day and gone the next. We thought it was pretty neat. I would be right there with you, marveling over your discovery. I agree with Patti: “Isn’t God’s universe amazing.”

Rock cairns is SO MUCH SMOOTHER that Neanderthal Like Rock Monuments .. or however I attempted to describe them. The thing is this : IF I start getting bogged-down in any way whatsoever .. I risk totally bogging-down. So anything to keep my momentum going forward is necessary.
Here today and gone tomorrow your tall (18-inch) Rock Cairn ! Amazing !
