DEC 7, 14 .. CHUNGKING MANSION .. KOWLOON .. PEARL HARBOR DAY

IN THIS POST YOU ARE GOING TO SEE PHOTOGRAPHS OF THREE ROOMS IN THE CHUNGKING MANSION. Rooms I stayed in on December the 6th .. 7th .. and 24th.

What began on December 6th as a single Post has become a TWO PART POST ..

Part 1 was written December 6th .. and many .. if not most of you .. have already read what I am now calling Part 1.

As life happens .. THINGS CHANGE ..

I am now writing Part 2 on Sunday December 7th ..

WHAT CHANGED?

I was told this .. “Sir you are going to have to move into another room. A problem has developed with the plumbing in your room. We are sorry for any inconvenience.”

But! .. But! .. But! .. NO BUTS Sir!

So this morning I packed up all of my Bobbseys and moved them into a common area here at the Guest House and went to a meeting at 12 Borrett Road over on Hong Kong Island. So now I will break this off and break this Post into two parts ..

I did add two night scene photos as well as several others into the CHUNGKING Mansion Post .. Part 1 below ..

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Part 1 – December 6, 2014 ..

Today I took yet another deep breath .. and once again I moved. Today I moved out of The Union Mansion on Chatham Road South into the CHUNGKING Mansion on Nathan Road.

Just one flattering photograph of The Union Mansion.  IF (Oh one of those BIG IFs!) there is any possible way .. and of course there is NO WAY that you can call any large building in the Hong Kong Metro Area ‘kind-of-rural’ .. but IF you could .. you could say the The Union Mansion off Chatham Road South is ‘kind-of-sort-of-rural’.  Nice trees .. very nice in fact.

DSCN0021[1]

Now here we go directly from the skillet into the fire.  Nathan Road is to Chatham Road South as The National Football League is to Semi-Pro Arena Football. Nathan Road is one big MAJOR ROAD. Chatham Road South is kind of like in the suburbs. Captain you are silly. There are NO suburbs in the Hong Kong Metro Area. Keep the above ‘rural setting’ in mind as you look below at Nathan Road and The ChungKing Mansion.

Directly straight ahead of you is my NEW HOME here in Kowloon .. The Chung KingMansion on Nathan Road. Will you all make-a-mental-note of the Pandora Carousel in the lower left corner of the below photo.

DSCN7713[1]

Below are two refresher photos for you of the charming and magical Pandora Carousel. You all saw the Pandora Carousel over at my blogspot web site .. bobba caps doxology.

DSCN7498[1]

In the above photo .. The ChungKing Mansion is at the top right. Further below in this Post I am going to show you a set of three photos taken looking down from my room up near the roof the ChungKing Mansion.  I will use the Pandora Carousel as a common point in each of them.

OK!  Back to the MANIC NATHAN ROAD scene.  We move a few steps closer to The ChungKing Mansion.

DSCN7714[1]

Do you see mention of Pandora at the top left of the below photo?

DSCN7715[1]

Above and below .. two photos of either side of the Main Entrance to The ChungKing Mansion.

DSCN7710[1]

The Nathan Road Area as-a-whole is busy BUSY!

DSCN7709[1]

Below we will look directly up at The ChungKing Mansion.  My room is up near the top.  IF Patti was here she could hang my blaze yellow jacket out to be seen.

DSCN7711[1]

Taken last night .. below you can see my room on the 14th floor. From the top floor (a light is on in the right-center of the mansion) .. my room is two floors down and is the second room with a light as you look down from the top floor.  I am at the right edge of the ChungKing Mansion.

DSCN7785[1]

In the photo below .. focus on the right edge of the building .. if you look straight up to the top of the building my room is the top room of those rooms along the right side of the building with a light on. My room light is the brightest light shown.

DSCN7784[1]

One more ‘Quick Peek’ at the serene Chatham Road South area.

DSCN0018[1]

The lobby and the entryway area of The ChungKing Mansion is so busy and so crazy that I did not shoot a photo of the scene.  I may do so later but keep-in-mind today was moving day.

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

CHUNGKING MANSION .. 14th FLOOR .. ROOM NUMBER 18 ..

A ROOM WITH A VIEW!

Further down below in this Post are photos of ROOM NUMBER 11 also on the 14th FLOOR ..

We have entered The CHUNGKING Mansion .. We have checked in .. Now we are going to see my room.  The main entryway sign to my room is .. ah-h-h just a little on the dark side.

DSCN7780[1]

Nice tone-setter for the guests .. I like it.

DSCN7779[1]

On the left edge of the below photo is the fresh laundry of the bedding hung out to dry. Following the below photo I show you a close-up photo of the sign at the end of the hall up near the ceiling.

DSCN7778[1]

Below a photo with the laundry taken-in. Quite a difference.

DSCN7783[1]

Below a close up of the sign for the Guest House. It is not too clear in the above two photos.

DSCN7777[1]

Now for a look-see at my room. It has a fully functional window.

DSCN7756[1]

Since we are here and looking straight directly ahead .. I will show you what the view DIRECTLY across the street from my room looks like as viewed from my window.

DSCN7764[1]

Lord God In Heaven Above .. here I thought my Union Mansion was the BIG time.  I now see The Union Mansion is in the minor leagues as to the BIG’s!

I mean .. you-want-grim .. you-got-grim .. at least STRAIGHT AHEAD DIRECTLY ACROSS FROM MY ROOM.

*Author’s Note .. I nearly did NOT show the above view directly straight across from my room BECAUSE in a way it is totally unfair to the exceptional views all around .. North up Nathan Road and South down Nathan Road.  But what is .. IS and it is grim directly across from me. I think we have a slum-landlord who won’t upgrade the property.

OK looking back from the window towards the foot of my bed. My room is VERY CLEAN!

DSCN7757[1]

Now standing beside my bed .. which would be to the left of the above photo we look at the necessary room.

DSCN7754[1]

DSCN7755[1]

I will repeat myself .. My Room Is Spotless bordering on being IMMACULATE! I am pleased with my room!  Below we have a great situation! Room UNDER my bed to stash my luggage.  Across the top of the below photo is the bed rail for the bed.

DSCN7772[1]

Below .. on my bed in the upper left .. you can see that my Bobbseys have already begun to jump out of their bag and begin to magically clutter every surface. I LOVE the under-bed storage area.

DSCN7773[1]

IN FACT .. I REALLY LIKE MY ROOM A LOT!

OK Sports Fans let’s look outside. Below (far down there below) we look North up Nathan road.

“Dad Oh Dad .. Dad please do not drop me Dad.  This is scary the way you are holding me out with one hand and snapping my shutter button with one hand Dad!” /sign me as/  Dad’s Nikon Coolpix L22 Camera.

DSCN7761[1]

A closer look at the extreme top of the buildings on the immediate left above.

DSCN7771[1]

Now we turn back around 180 degrees and look South down Nathan Road.  You can see the Hong Kong Skyline in the distance.

DSCN7763[1]

From my room we have looked North up Nathan Road and back South down Nathan Road.  WONDERFUL VIEWS!

For this reason I felt it was a tad unfair to show the MESS directly across from my room.  I like my views a lot except for directly across from me.

OK do you all remember PANDORA’s CAROUSEL up above?  We are now going to LOOK DOWN and you can use PANDORA’s CAROUSEL as a reference point.

Do you see her at the top left?

DSCN7759[1]

Now I am ‘panning up’ and she is now in the center of the below photo. Patti .. in the below photo .. your bookstore is up the street at the top of the photo and to the right.

DSCN7758[1]

Now she is at the bottom as we have ‘panned up’.

DSCN7768[1]

Now I am going to look back South down Nathan Road towards Victoria Harbor. The lower building in the center of the below photo is the lower level of The Peninsula Hotel. The high-rise extension of the Peninsula Hotel can be seen in the extreme top right of the below photo. The Peninsula Hotel is one of the oldest and one of the most famous and one of the most expensive hotels in the Hong Kong Metro Area!

DSCN7766[1]

Below I have swung my camera to the right of the above photo to show the high-rise extension of the Peninsula Hotel.

DSCN7765[1]

A closer look at the top of the hotel high-rise section.

DSCN7776[1]

Below I am showing you a street level view of the hotel. The Peninsula Hotel is the one on the extreme left of the below buildings.

DSCN7782[1]

Back to my room!  Constantly .. as in all-the-time .. Helicopters were carrying the SUPER ELITE of the BIG TIME ROLLERS to the roof of the Peninsula Hotel. One after another or so it seemed to me.

DSCN7775[1]

DSCN7774[1]

What more can I say? .. What more can I add?

I think that maybe I will do a photo shoot of the lobby area.  You want to see a crazy scene? .. you will see a crazy scene!

Smiles!   Cap

Below is a map showing the location of The ChungKing Mansion which is the balloon on the lower left. Patti your bookstore was on Lock Road. The balloon on the upper right is my Union Mansion.

ANDREJ ! .. Thank You So Very Much For All Of The Work You Put Into Our Website Here! I like the map feature and I think that I have the ‘hang-of-it’ my friend!

DSCN0015

You should be happy and proud of our site.  I know I am! Your Ally! .. Cap

Keep scrolling down for Part 2 written Sunday December 7th .. see you below ..

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

CHUNGKING MANSION .. 16th FLOOR ..

Part 2 – December 7, 2014 .. Pearl Harbor Day in the U.S.

And Sports Fans .. Today I myself got BOMBED like Pearl Harbor got bombed back in 1941 with this dratted room change!

What is .. IS.

I did NOT want to move from my room (Part 1 above) on the 14th floor up to another room on the 16th floor. But I had no choice whatsoever.  I would prefer to stay put .. in one room .. in one place.  Moving is a hassle .. Moving takes time and effort.  As I write this second part to this post I am actively exploring my options to get my own place here in the Metro Hong Kong Area. I would like to actually live here for awhile .. on a month-to-month basis. This being written I am flying to India on Monday the 15th of December. Thus with only one week left here on this visit .. I very well may NOT have-in-place a rental unit before I go to India. I have many options.

So here we go all over again .. another day and yet another room.

RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW I WANT TO MAKE A STATEMENT !

IF .. AS YOU LOOK AT THE FOLLOWING PHOTOGRAPHS .. MY NEW ROOM LOOKS CLEAN AND SPOTLESS .. BELIEVE ME IT IS !

I BELIEVE I COULD EAT OFF THE FLOOR !

Below we look down the corridor to my new room.

DSCN7786[1]

My new room is on the immediate right.  I will now turn the door knob and we will look into my (yet another) new room.

From our vantage point .. in the below photo .. it would seem that the bed stretches from one wall to the other.  It looks like there is no room whatsoever between the bed and the walls of my new room.

DSCN7795[1]

When we now look at my room from within the room .. you can see why the above photo appears to show that the bed takes up the entire width of the room BECAUSE IT DOES!

DSCN7796[1]

Lets take a closer look.  Yes .. it truly occupies the entire width of the room! Please note that I have a window beside my bed. I actually have two windows in this room. You will see the other window in photos further below.

DSCN7797[1]

WELL ! What do YOU want for $64.93 United States Dollars per day! YOU want space under the bed to put your things since there is no other space except ON the bed do you?  Well that can be and that is arranged for you!

Below is a photo of my bed IN ACTION. I sit with my back against the bedroll and the pillows and write post cards.  TRULY DO LIKE MY ROOM even though it is a tad small. My room is serving me very nicely.

DSCN7879[1]

What a gift it is to have storage space UNDER my bed.  This feature is just great.

DSCN7807[1]

OK onto my bed for a look see from the head of my bed back towards where I was standing above at the foot of the bed.

DSCN7811[1]

There on the left of these two photos is my other window. In these two photos you will note on the right the door into the bathroom.

DSCN7812[1]

OK now lets have a look see at the bathroom. The hot water heater gets the water DANGEROUSLY hot.

DSCN7801[1]

Panning down we see the shower hose located at bottom of the hot water heater .. and the soap and shampoo dispensers for the sink.

DSCN7802[1]

And the water closet with the sink peeking out at the left below.

DSCN7800[1]

Below is a better photo of the sink.

DSCN7799[1]

THIS ROOM IS POSITIVELY IMMACULATE !

Now to the windows. The below two photos (as I ‘pan’ down) show the window at the foot of my bed along with a small storage / working area or a DESK if you will.

DSCN7803[1]

DSCN7804[1]

I decided to show you more details of the little desk shown above.  It may have slipped past you but did you notice in the photo immediately above and in the three photos below that I have my very own private TELEPHONE on my little desk

DSCN7873[1]

DSCN7876[1]

Oh GOOD GRIEF CAPTAIN ! Don’t you think that the below photo is an ittsy bittsy teeny weenie OVERKILL about the TELEPHONE !

DSCN7874[1]

Yes it is a little bit of an overkill BUT it truly is a BIG DEAL to have in right in my room to call Patti and others using my PCCW Telephone Card.

Moving right along below you see the view looking directly out the above window.

DSCN7809[1]

Not much of a view looking straight out is it? Well take a look with my camera out the window pointed down. Oh My! Not much to gaze upon down there either!

DSCN7810[1]

Now we will go to the window beside my bed.  First looking straight out.

DSCN7815[1]

And below with my camera out the window pointed down.

DSCN7816[1]

I HAD PLANNED TO KEEP THE CURTAINS PULLED SHUT BUT THE BREEZE COMING INTO MY ROOM FROM THE TWO WINDOWS WHEN I HAVE THEM FULLY OPENED UP IS HEAVENLY !

Just for the heck of it .. I will show you .. you know to refresh your memory (from my room in Part 1 above) .. my views yesterday.

DSCN7761[1]

DSCN7771[1]

DSCN7763[1]

DSCN7776[1]

Sports Fans Listen Up .. with this room change I feel like I have been HAD! I did not notice anything wrong with the plumbing. Maybe a long time favorite customer showed up unexpectedly and VOILA yours truly got the shaft! Something happened here and what it is ain’t exactly clear.

So knowing I have been HAD but not having a single clue as to why .. what to do?

SMILE AND SAUNTER ON !

DSCN6411

The BOTTOM LINE is simply this. Yes this room is small.  But is is clean to the point of being absolutely immaculate and my room served me EXTREMELY WELL !

DECEMBER 24th 2014 .. CHRISTMAS EVE DAY ..

CHUNGKING MANSON .. 14th FLOOR .. ROOM NUMBER 11 ..

At the top of this Post I showed you photographs of the .. CHUNGKING MANSION .. 14th FLOOR .. ROOM NUMBER 18 ..

Here is ROOM NUMBER 11 .. again .. on the 14th FLOOR .. It is a SINGLE BED ROOM ..

DSCN8851[1]

IF you look straight ahead .. on the table you will see a telephone. It worked just fine and I called Patti several times using my PCCW Telephone Card. NOTICE THE WINDOW at the head of the bed. In these rooms you cannot assume you will have a window. Both in the bedroom and in the bathroom the windows open up fully. Very nice.

DSCN8852[1]

NICE TOUCH having an operational telephone.

DSCN8853[1]

Another nice touch is having AMPLE SPACE UNDER THE BED to put your luggage and other items you want out-of-your-way.

DSCN8866[1]

Looking towards the foot of the bed out the door into the hallway. Yes that is a television set.

DSCN8854[1]

Pure safe water .. COLD and BOILING HOT for instant noodles which I am eating many cups of.

DSCN8868[1]

Looking up the hall in the other direction from the above photo. The two corridors are at a 90-degree angle to each other. THE HOSTEL IS CLEAN .. VERY CLEAN !

DSCN8867[1]

Looking into the bathroom.  NOTICE the fully operational window.

DSCN8858[1]

Almost like an airplane lavatory. Pretty compact. But what more do you need really.

DSCN8857[1]

SCALDING HOT WATER but it does have a mixer faucet. I used the hot water in a basin to wash up with.

DSCN8859[1]

Looking straight ahead out my window.

DSCN8862[1]

Looking down.

DSCN8863[1]

Looking to the right.

DSCN8860[1]

I show these views because here in Hong Kong .. people in these buildings will live their entire lives with such views. This is what reality is for many people.

DSCN8861[1]

DAD .. DOWN HERE DAD .. OH DAD .. Dad IF you don’t take my photograph it will never ever be taken. I have heard about you Dad. Please Dad snap my photograph.

DSCN8891[1]

Aren’t you happy that you are not hearing such inanimate objects calling out to you!

Time to sign off .. Having fussed with this post through several revisions.  Cap

Cap, a great series of photos and explanations! Super nifty! A question for you: I am sure you have a logical reason, but wouldn’t it be easier to stay in one place, maybe spend a little more “$” and have a place to work out of? Of course if these Mansions have a limited time to stay, than you have no choice. You do such a good job of explanations for your travels, maybe a short comment or two on all the moving may of be interest to your many bloggers and friends. I really enjoy all your photos and stories – try not to split too much orange juice any more…

    1. Cap

Thanks so much Jim .. aka ‘Zilla to our followers. I have NO choice in many of these moves. The HOMY INN has proven to be PHENOMENAL. Above the beyond Jim. That being said the HOMY INN serves an extremely transient visitor population. So while I could ‘homestead’ at the HOMY INN I simply am NOT able to do so .. several times I have HAD TO MOVE out and sleep on the street or go to another hostel. See money is not the only thing here Jim. Having what I have here at the HOMY INN is not provided at too many places. That thing is : 24/7 FREE use of a desktop computer with state of the art high speed internet. But money IS an issue too since the hotels will cost from $150 US Dollars up PER DAY. I will be here thirty days. Jim 30 days times $150 or so US Dollars a day ADDS UP. Smiles .. Cap ..

It’s a good thing you have a system for organizing, packing and unpacking because you do a lot of it. So now you’re staying the the Chung King Mansions after staying at the Union Mansion. I love how you possess them. They’re your Union Mansion and your Chung King Mansion. Why not!! They’re yours while you’re there!!!

Please do be careful leaning out your window to take photos. It’s a long way down from the 16th floor. What if you were taking a picture that required you to lean your upper body far beyond the window sill and you unexpectedly hiccupped. Just saying. I’m overreacting of course. I like to tease, Cap.

Your room does seem easier to live in with the underbed storage etc. It’s unfortunate that your view from your window isn’t grand but a least you’re not looking at a wall when you look that way. Right?

I see I have another post of yours to read that you posted yesterday. Off I go,
    Shaddy

    1. Cap

Shaddy the room window had bars on it. I pushed my arm through the bars and extended my arm out as far as I could. BUT there is no way I could have fallen unless the entire window bar system failed. I also had my camera wrapped around my wrist with its camera strap to prevent dropping it and possibly killing a pedestrian on the sidewalk below. Cheerio Shaddy .. Cap ..

Ah, yet another moving day. I must clarify for anyone checking comments that when I was with Cap, HE moved all but our hand-carries and then came back for me to just walk with him to the next place. I am just as much in awe as any of you may be at the energy it takes for Cap to just keep up with himself!

Enjoyed the above post, leaving the Union Mansion (Homy Inn) and moving to the Chung King Mansion. I can picture exactly where you are…I remember well that building facade where you go into the main entrance. And, it is so great that you can put up the map (thank you Andrej for your efforts and for schooling Cap in being able to utilize the maps). I was always fascinated with the helicopters landing on and taking off of the high-rise roof of the Peninsula Hotel, transporting the likes of perhaps Donald Trump, the Koch brothers or some leaders of nations most likely! WONDERFUL to have the storage SPACE under your bed. Is that ever a bonus!!! Enjoy your new digs!!! Love and hugs. Patti

    1. Cap

First .. to get into these rooms you PAY UP FRONT NO REFUND POSSIBLE .. so they ‘hold all of the cards’ and I do mean ALL of the cards. Second .. they are busy. I am in a ‘high season’ right now and rooms are scarce. This is why I have been FORCED to move from the HOMY INN because this extremely transient population these hostels serve is totally unpredictable and when they say we are full I must move I had no choice whatsoever. I cannot .. I am totally unable to figure out or to understand their system.

I was in Room 601 for three days. I wanted to stay put in Room 601. I was then told I HAD to move to Room 1507. I said .. “Why can’t you just give Room 1507 to the people you are giving Room 601 to and let me just stay put in Room 601?” The person would have NEVER known the difference. IN fact they would have gotten a far superior room in 1507 than in 601 at no increase in cost to them.

Did your parents ever in your lifetime say to you .. JUST BECAUSE !

MOST of these hostel managers are very hard and cold and impersonal simply because they deal daily with tough hombres. They would laugh in my face IF I said .. “I don’t like my room can I move?”

With my age of 78 I am being treated with great respect because I am polite to them. Today I politely asked the manager .. “How could I get a room overlooking Nathan Road like the one YOU put me into last Saturday night?” I got no answer .. I got words .. nouns and adjectives and pronouns and prepositional phrases mixed with verbs and adverbs .. yes I got lots of words .. but I got NO answer.

I said .. “Can I .. right now .. this instant .. make a reservation for next September 2015 for a Nathan Road view?” .. “No we can’t do that Sir.”

Gullible .. thanks so much for being a part of all of this .. Smiles .. Cap ..
