SEP 22, 22 .. THE AUTUMNAL EQUINOX
Here we are, once again, at one of the four defining dates on the calendar up here in Alaska, The Autumn Equinox.

The Equinox occurs on the two days a year when the day and night are nearly equal. This happens on the September (Autumnal) equinox and the March (Vernal) equinox. For somewhat technical, in my opinion somewhat complicated, astronomical reasons, the day and the night are not precisely 12 hours (equal) long on the equinox. Of course the Equinox is the same everywhere. However, for those of us up here in Alaska, the length of our days getting shorter and the length of our nights getting longer after the Autumnal Equinox means we are heading into the dark part of the year. On the Winter Solstice, Wednesday the 21st of December 2022, the daylight begins increasing again, slowly but surely. Up here we begin to really see the effects (the loss of sunlight). Down in the lower 48 states, the difference is not quite so pronounced.
Ah Yes, the seasons and the cycles of life itself.
And? Patti and I are fortunate in that we will head South sometime in November and enjoy much longer days down in Arizona. Oh By The Way, the winter days down in Arizona will also be much warmer too! Truly we are blessed.

HAPPY AUTUMN EQUINOX, to my two besties, Cap and Patti! Yes, the seasons are-a-changing! And Father Time marches on! We’re anxiously awaiting your arrival back to the temperate desert climes. Just an aside…during my 21yrs habitating in Alaska I always dreaded June 21, the summer solstice (longest day of light–and the beginnings of a gradual loss of light each day–UNTIL December 21, the Winter Solstice!) Being born a native Angelino (Los Angeles) and spending a majority of my years in sunny S. Calif. I never did get comfortable with long winters and dimenishing amounts of light. But I digress! The majesty of Alaska, it’s peoples, creatures big and small allowed me to find balance in each and every day….and always be grateful! It is what it is. And we all make our choices, don’t we! Never-the-less, Little Bit and I are off to The Channel for our morning walk. Temps are cooler, much cooler, but truly invigorating and comfortable.
