Our National Parks are an important part of many of our lives.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

National Park Service Founders Day<\/em><\/span> is observed every year on August 25. The day recognizes the superior conservation and preservation efforts of the National Parks System. Whenever you are enjoying scenic trails, open spaces, watersheds, or recreational areas, remember that the National Park Service works hard to provide a natural outdoor resource accessible to every American. They are also responsible for making hiking and biking trails accessible to all of us. The National Parks System is committed to creating outdoor experiences like no other. All National Parks in the US charm us with their beauty and teach us so much about local geography and history.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On August 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed the Organic Act. The Act established the National Park Service. As part of the Department of Interior, the National Park Service protects 400 areas across the 50 American states and territories and the district of Columbia. They are entrusted with the protection of national parks totaling 84 million acres!<\/p>\n

The first national park, Yellowstone, was established in 1872. Congress passed legislation to preserve the land as a public park that would benefit the Americans.<\/p>\n

This made America the first country in the world to create a public park solely for the benefit of its citizens. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

This would be the first of many steps that the government would take to create and preserve national land, forests, coastal regions, wildlife refuges, and historic sites for posterity.<\/p>\n

At the time when the National Park Service was founded, there were only 33 federally created areas. This included the National Capital Parks, the National Mall, and the White House in Washington D.C. Today, there are more than 400 areas, including 59 fully designated National Parks that are looked after by the National Park Service. Covering more than 84 million acres, they range from the tiny Thaddeus Kosciuszko National Memorial in Pennsylvania of only .02 acres, to Alaska\u2019s Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve spanning a vast 13.2 million acres.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The National Park Service has 22,000 workers who are involved in permanent, temporary, and seasonal employment.<\/p>\n

An additional 340,000 volunteers are also enrolled with the service.<\/p>\n

Our National Parks welcome almost 300 million visitors every year.<\/p>\n

Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve in Alaska is the largest national park in the U.S. Seven of the 10 biggest national parks can be found in Alaska.<\/p>\n

Kiss and Make Up Day<\/em><\/span> on August 25 celebrates the end of a grudge. After an argument, it\u2019s easy not to forgive. It\u2019s easy to stay angry but, remember, it was Gandhi who said that only the strong can forgive, and the weak can never. Exercise your strength by forgiving \u2014 just kiss and make up! The holiday was created by a woman named Jacqueline Milton to re-examine old relationships and find ways to repair them. All this is to say that today is the best day to bury the hatchet!<\/p>\n

Kissing and making up \u2014 the two essential steps in a relationship after any disagreement or feud with any friend, family member, or your partner! The history of kissing and the history of making up are two separate and interesting tales.<\/p>\n

The first texts (and we mean ancient scriptures, not on your iPhone!) that mention kissing date back to 1500 B.C. The people who wrote them lived in what we today call India. At the time, they would frequently rub noses to express romance \u2014 at some point, someone\u2019s face slipped, and the joys of kissing were discovered! In 300 B.C., kissing spread out of India, carried by Alexander the Great\u2019s conquering soldiers. Soon, it was a worldwide phenomenon!<\/p>\n

Roman missionaries were sent out across Europe to spread the word on kissing \u2014 with their own lips. They even differentiated the types of kisses back then, from the \u2018osculum\u2019 (friendship kiss) and the \u2018basium\u2019 (romantic lip-to-lip kiss) to what would later be known as the French kiss! Kisses became an extremely important part of cultures, so much so that laws were passed around proper kissing, and kisses were sometimes used to validate contracts in the absence of writing and reading abilities.<\/p>\n

The popularity of kissing died out in England around the 1660s, either due to restrictive church laws or the Great Plague of London. Of course, it would become popular as a gesture of friendship again, along with the handshake. Throughout the next few centuries, kissing became the act we know it to be today. However, kissing was very restricted in Hollywood for much of the 20th century, though some films, like \u201cThe Kiss\u201d, got away with it.<\/p>\n

Kiss and Make Up Tid-Bits..<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Not only does forgiveness lower the stress hormone cortisol, but it can also lower your blood pressure and reduce strain on your heart (once that stressful situation is forgiven and behind you).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Kissing releases oxytocin, the love hormone, and endorphins, which make you happy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Though emotions can often get in the way, choosing forgiveness means releasing anger and bitterness, and working to be a more loving person \u2014 remember, hating someone is like drinking poison and hoping the other person dies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It is said that a great relationship is composed of two great forgivers \u2014 arguments are a natural part of relationships and can be healthy in strict moderation, however, any good friend or partner knows that, at the end of the day, it\u2019s essential to forgive and find common ground if you want the relationship to last.<\/div>\n

Many of us do not have these virtues! Humility and the ability to take the blame, apologize, and move on do not come easily to all. Neither does the patience to wait for forgiveness. With your apologies today \u2014 either offered or accepted \u2014 try to exercise these wonderful traits.<\/div>\n

The bottom line remains: Both people<\/em><\/span> must want to live in peace and harmony.<\/div>\n
