Today marks the 83rd anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On December the 7th, 1941, I was age 5. I used to quietly slip downstairs in my home and listen to the news on the radio that my parents were listening to in our living room.<\/p>\n

At the time, Walter Winchell was a prominent radio news announcer. He always began with the following statement :<\/p>\n

\u201cGood evening, Mr. and Mrs. North and South America and all the ships at sea. Let\u2019s go to press.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eighty Three (83) years ago TODAY.. December 7th.. 1941.. I was only five years old.. but even at five years of age.. listening quietly to a newscast by Walter Winchell with my parents on that December 7th, I knew that something really big had happened on that .. Day of Infamy .. Pearl Harbor Day ..<\/p>\n

On December the 7th, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service in a deadly surprise attack, bombed Pearl Harbor, Territory of Hawaii, in an attempt to seriously destroy the influence of the United States Navy in the Pacific Ocean. This surprise attack plunged the United States into WWII and into the war against Japan in the Pacific. It became known as The Day of Infamy.<\/p>\n

This phrase came directly from President Franklin D. Roosevelt in his speech declaring war on Japan, December 8, 1941.<\/p>\n

” Yesterday, December 7, 1941\u2014a date which will live in infamy<\/em><\/span>\u2014the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan. “<\/p>\n

Beginning in January of 1958, I served in the United States Marine Corps. This was only 13-years after the fighting with the Japanese had ceased. I was privileged to serve with members of the Marine Corps who had fought the Japanese in the Pacific Theater during WWII. Few talked about their combat experiences, but all of us who had not served during WWII knew how horrific the fighting had been throughout the Pacific and especially at Iwo Jima and Okinawa towards the end of the war.<\/p>\n

All I can do here is to salute those who fought and the many who died when I, as a child, could do neither. However, when my time to serve appeared, I was proud to do so.<\/p>\n

The day Japan attacked the United States at Pearl Harbor, is commemorated with the National Pearl Harbor Day of Remembrance each year on December 7. On that day in 1941, more than 2,400 people died in Japan\u2019s attack on the Hawaiian base of America\u2019s Pacific Fleet. Hundreds of aircraft were destroyed or damaged, as were most of the ships in the harbor, and thousands of service men and women were killed or injured. It was an unprecedented surprise attack that precipitated the United States entry into WW II as we sided with the Allies and declared war on Japan.<\/p>\n

The United States was actually in peace talks with Japan when Japan launched 350 warplanes in a surprise air attack on Pearl Harbor, home of the Pacific Fleet. 330 U.S. planes and 19 ships were damaged or destroyed, and thousands of people were killed or injured.<\/p>\n

Japan\u2019s designs on the Philippines, then a territory of the United States, precipitated their attack on Pearl Harbor in an attempt to destroy the Pacific Fleet and buy time for them to conquer what they referred to as the Southern Resource Zone. Up until then, the mainly isolationist position of the US prevented our entrance into WW II. That position disintegrated with the attack, as the American people united in a call to war \u2014a call that eventually lead to the Allies winning that war.<\/p>\n

Today is a good time to think of the hardships and ordeals endured by our service men and women every day and everywhere in the world. The United States has hundreds of thousands of service men and women deployed in the protection of our country and people everywhere. Remember them in your actions and your prayers.<\/p>\n
