NAVAJO CODE TALKERS DAY..

Really means something to me! I certainly know that I might stand totally alone here.

World War II ended on September the 2nd, 1945.

I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in late January 1958. So at the beginning of my military service with the Marines, WWII had been over for thirteen (13) years. This is germane because I actually knew, and served with, several veterans of the Marine Corps who had personal knowledge of the Navaho Code Talkers.

Navajo Code Talkers Day, celebrated every year on August 14.

This is a day that holds great importance in the history of the U.S. This is because the day recognizes the contributions of Navajo Marines during World War II. Yes, Navajo Marines encoded and transmitted messages using a complex Navajo language-based code during a time when secret communication was essential to win a war. And guess what? The code was never broken by Japanese forces in the Pacific and proved to be of great assistance to the U.S. Marines. On this day, celebrate the great American heroes and their service to the nation!

The Navajo Code Talkers were first deployed in 1942 in the Battle of Guadalcanal.

The Navajo Code Talkers were truly “American heroes.”

The U.S. government recruited over 400 Navajo men to serve during the war. The Navajo Code Talkers successfully transmitted more than 800 messages without error and helped the U.S. win the war.

The Navajo Code Talkers receive the first public recognition at the 4th Marine Division reunion. I served in the 4th Marine Division.
