As I have said before, Patti and I only pick National Today “Holidays” that mean something personally to one, or to both, of us.

Yes Oh Yes!!

There are MANY interesting, brilliant and outstanding NATIONAL TODAY Holidays BUT..

IF Patti and I have no actual experience with the subject of a subject of a “Holiday” we do not feature it.

NAVAJO CODE TALKERS DAY..

Yes Oh Yes!! I certainly know that I might stand totally alone here.

This Holiday Really Means Something Personal To Me!!

I was a member of the United States Marine Corps.

When I was on active duty in the Marine Corps back in the late 1950’s, I heard from older members of the Corps about the NAVAJO CODE TALKERS.

They are part and parcel of WWII Marine Corps History!

Philip Johnston, the son of a missionary who had grown up in the Navajo Nation, suggested using the Navajo language as a code. The rest is now history.

""

Navajo Code Talkers Day, observed every August 14th, honors the extraordinary contributions of Navajo Marines during World War II.

The Navajo Code Talkers were first deployed to the Battle of Guadalcanal (August 7, 1942 – February 9, 1943). Guadalcanal was the U.S. military’s first major land offensive against Japan in World War II. Led by the 1st Marine Division under Major General Alexander Vandegrift, Marines landed on Guadalcanal and Tulagi to seize a vital strategic airfield, turning the tide of the Pacific War.

These Navajo Code Talkers developed and used an unbreakable code based on their native Diné language, proving vital and pivotal in the Pacific theater.

""

""

""

""

""

The Navajo Code Talkers Museum, and the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, often host events and fundraising drives to preserve their legacy.

The Navajo Nation is the largest Native American territory in the United States. It has played a crucial role in supporting the Code Talkers and preserving their legacy.
