It has now been two full years since I have visited Manley and longer since Patti has visited our cabin there. We are both (guardedly) looking forward to the trip. The drive to Fairbanks is on a well paved and maintained two lane road (The Glenn and Parks Highways). The drive from Fairbanks out to Manley is 160 miles, 80 of which are on a double lane, good, paved road. The final 80 miles consist of some one lane unpaved sections of the road as well as about 20 miles of pavement. The entire final 80 miles is in very remote Alaska and if you have vehicle problems you must wait for assistance which is iffy at best. To safeguard ourselves, we notify friends in Manley of our plans and advise them of our anticipated arrival time. If we don’t arrive as expected they will come find us.

Even better is this : We have arranged with our neighbors to meet in Fairbanks on Thursday or Friday when they will be in town and behind us when we head out for Manley. Then if we have problems, help is a few miles behind us.
