OCT 27, 19 .. NICE TRY MISTER WINTER .. SORRY .. NO CIGAR YET

What is the sex of each season of the year? I have no trouble thinking of Spring, Summer and Autumn as female entities. But Winter is a different situation. Winter seems to be male in nature. Indeed you often hear Winter referred to as Mister Winter. It seems natural and so Mister Winter it shall be.

Yesterday we had just a little dusting of snow. The below sidewalk was in the shade and so it was cool to begin with.

And yes, most of it melted upon contact with the ground but some of it stayed. The two below photos were taken within a few minutes of the above photo.

Ah but Mister Winter was persistent! By sunset there was a small accumulation of snow eager to see the arrival of night with its cooler temperatures.

This morning dawned with the ambient temperature at 7° F.

“Close Mister Winter. But no cigar just yet.”

“You have gotten our attention. We know that you are indeed ‘in-the-wings’ of the Theater of the Seasons.

As I get ready to publish this post, bright sun and clear blue skies dominate a beautiful day BUT the ambient temperature at 22° F is still below freezing.

The snow is happy.

So too are we.

I have heard winter referred to as Old Man Winter, so . . I would go along with the ‘male in nature’ determination. This definitely looks like a heavy “dusting”. In my books it counts! Whenever we get our first snow here in Alaska it will help brighten things up with the daylight we are losing. It will be even more dramatic next Sunday when we set our clocks back for the ending of Daylight Savings Time. And the hands on the clock, the pages on the calendar, keep turning . . Smiles and love. Oh yes! The hands on the clock, the pages on the calendar, keep turning. Truer words were never spoken. So you think that this ‘heavy dusting’ counts as our first snow of the Winter 2019-2020 season? My Jury is still out. The end of daylight savings. Another annual milestone to ponder.
