ESL (English as a Second Language)..
It has now been almost five (5) years since I have been out of the United States travelling Internationally. Obviously some, or maybe all of my “street smarts” about foreign languages has, to a large extent, been lost.
Robert 94956 left the below comment on yesterday’s Post.
Once worked with a guy (an esl speaker) who would shrug his shoulders and say “kaw-tiz”
I got his meaning but it took me years to realize he was saying “I don’t know what the heck it is”.
I myself wonder how “kaw-tiz” means “I don’t know what the heck it is”.
Here is my own very, VERY recent, experience with ESL.
I have a friend down in Arizona that seemed like he spoke absolutely perfect English. I had no idea that he was not totally fluent in English.
He has a wife who is terminally ill. We spoke at length (over one full hour) about the stress he is under and what he can do to assist his wife.
After we finished our long phone call I texted him as follows:
“Why don’t you offer to read a book, magazine, newspaper, something of interest to your wife? Patti loves me to read to her and maybe your wife would also enjoy you reading to her.”
I did not hear back from him for two or three days. Then he texted me..
“I looked up Synonyms for the word “offer” .. suggest, propose, recommend, present, put forward, submit, arrange.” Is it a present I am giving her?
He had absolutely no idea of what I meant when I said .. “Why don’t you offer to read to your wife?”
How is THAT for a Wowie!

Here is another esl speaker – my father. He aways said “take, frensen” meaning “take, for instance” when offering an example.
