NATIONAL DAY CALENDAR.. Is the source of all of the information on my “Days”.

The National Today website has thirty three (33) “Days” listed for August the 1st. 

Your Captain wouldn’t kid you about that would he!

Well! I scrolled all the way down to the end of August 1, and there, next to last, the 32nd “Day” at the very bottom of August 1 was Today’s Bingo Day for yours truly.

Oh The World Wide Web. Oh the Internet. They are hand and glove.

Why celebrate World Wide Web Day every August 1?

Because without the web, the Earth would be a super lonely place. Don’t believe us? Well, before the World Wide Web (WWW) was created, people had to spend a lot of money to contact someone far away. Today, voice calls, chats, and video calls are available at the click of a button. This is just one of the advantages the WWW brought to the world. It also made it easy to search information, access songs, find news online, and do thousands of other things that have empowered the world today. Thank your lucky stars you were born in a world that has the World Wide Web!

The World Wide Web is a revolutionary technology that led to the creation of thousands of other inventions that rule the world today. However, it took a few years before the World Wide Web was noticed by the masses. The proposal for the WWW was developed by Tim Berners-Lee in 1989 and was further enhanced with the help of Robert Cailliau, a Belgian informatics engineer and computer scientist. Together, they were able to develop the HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and then set it up for release in early 1992. Like many other great technologies, the WWW was not initially meant for the public and was devised to be utilized by physicists to share data. 

However, when the World Wide Web did reach the general public, it was an instant hit. At that time, it was merely a luxury, but today it’s a necessity. The popularity of the platform took off when the first website was produced and when photos started appearing on the web. The first photo was uploaded by Berners-Lee in 1992. Since then, there has been no stopping the World Wide Web and it furthermore proved to be the fastest-growing medium of communication by accumulating millions of active users by the mid-1990s. But this was just the beginning — by the 21st century, web usage transcended into advanced smartphones that operated more or less like computers. Today, the World Wide Web can be accessed through gaming devices, cell phones, laptops, and even watches.

Made just for the kids, Play Ball Day is celebrated annually on August 1.

This day was created by Major League Baseball (M.L.B.) and USA Baseball to encourage the participation of young children in the fields of softball and baseball. This initiative shows fun and interesting ways baseball can be played and enjoyed. By encouraging formal and casual participation, children will be able to engage in skill-developing activities that are exciting. The program also allows children to find their passions and have a foot into the possibility of a future career in sports.

Baseball is an exciting sport for people of all age groups. It is, however, an even bigger thrill for young children to experience. That is why the Little League Baseball and Softball organization has millions of members worldwide. Little League Baseball and Softball is an organization that arranges youth baseball and softball leagues throughout America and the world at large. It is made up of children between the age of four to 16. Local volunteers organize leagues that are chartered through Little League International creating several divisions of little leagues that are easily accessible by the children.

It was founded by Carl Stotz in 1939 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and the first Little League Baseball World Series was played in 1947. The little league was restricted to allow only boys to participate until the rule was revised in 1974. There are currently over 2.6 million children in Little League Baseball worldwide. In 2015, Major League Baseball (M.L.B.) partnered with USA Baseball and USA Softball to create the ‘Play Ball Initiative’ to encourage the participation of people of all age groups, especially the youth, in baseball and softball activities.

Events such as the ‘Jr. Home Run Derby’ and the ‘Softball Breakthrough Series’ are organized across the country to get aspiring athletes involved in the sports. Play Ball Day also highlights the different exciting ways baseball and softball could be played aside from the organized leagues and tournaments. These methods include a range of methods, from a simple game of ‘catch’ or ‘wiffle ball,’ to skill competitions like ‘Pitch Hit & Run.’ M.L.B. and USA Baseball created Play Ball Day to be observed annually on August 1 and to encourage children to expand their sporting skills through baseball.

Carl Stotz was playing a game of catch with his nephew when he got the inspiration to start a Little League.

Over 100 countries across the world participate in Little League baseball.

A girl played in secret. In 1950, when only boys were allowed to play, Kay Johnston was the first girl to play baseball and did so by cutting her hair and disguising herself.

There are over 18,000 leagues across the world.

The Little League Museum is home to the only display of the complete uniform of Babe Ruth.

Back in the late 1950’s, I was a member of the United States Marine Corps. 

World War II was still fresh in the minds of members of the Marine Corps. Almost topmost was the horrific battle at Guadalcanal, an island in the South Pacific.

When I saw this Day, I had to Post the below photos.

Guadalcanal is an island located in the Solomon Islands chain and is known for its significance during World War II. It is a 2,510 square mile island and is primarily a jungle.
