There is no way to dress up the serious subject of we senior citizens falling and take it to ‘show and tell!’
Falls are usually instantaneous. Sudden. One second you’re up on your feet and then you are on the ground.
We’ve had friends who fell in their own home, hit their head on a coffee table, and died, dead, on the spot. Fallen down a flight of stairs and died, on the spot. Fallen, could not get up, could not call anyone, and died a sad and lonely death a day or so later before they were found.
Both Patti and I have fallen a number of times.
Odd but my falls have been more severe. Two broken knee caps. A broken hip. A seriously injured shoulder that still ‘bothers me’. May the 28, 2023, I took a terrible fall when I unknowingly stepped on a stray skate board that came from behind me. I could have died on the spot.
Patti has an 88 year old brother who keeps falling. He has been to the Emergency Room several times. And? Will NOT use a cane!
A neighbor has fallen several times recently and will NOT use a cane.
One of our friends fell yesterday. All he remembers is a zillion white spots. He ‘came to’ on the ground. Thankfully he was able to call his wife and they got him to the Emergency Room where they cleaned him up after sewing him up with 9 stitches.

When he texted us about his fall, he ended with the term.. LMAO.

Neither Patti nor I had a clue at to what LMAO meant so we Googled it.
Sure enough, we called him and he confirmed it!
At least he had a bit of humor about it. Sad to say, this is not his first fall.
Modern Medicine has no answers what so ever at to why we seniors fall. We have gone to seminars about ‘balance’ and got no answers.
What to do? Take falling seriously. Both of us use canes in our condo and elsewhere.
One time I fell (it was snowy and icy and I went down slowly) when I was using two canes with an ice spike on the bottom.

We are not going to end this Post on a negative tone.

One minute I was walking on a dry, sandy beach and the next my face was planted in it. But! I saved the camera!
Turns out I stepped on a half- buried driftwood stick, which then popped up and snagged the other foot. “Not so fast there, lady. Lie down in the sand and visit a while.”
“Nope, ” said I, after some help with the getting up part. “Bears to photograph. Bye,”
Oh My Gullible. It happens oh soooo fast. Whewie! A half buried driftwood stick and ker-pow you are down! So good you were not injured. For one thing, your eyes could have gotten scratched from the sand! Cap and Pattil
