My Philosophy About Sports.
If you’re not careful, the more rabid you are as a sports fan, the more likely you are buying a “Ticket to Hell”.
Hell in this case is being upset, angry, and constantly frustrated!
The origination, the development if you will, of My Philosophy About Being a Sports Fan, all began for me on a Sunday Autumn afternoon in San Francisco in November of 1986.
So, I’ve been working on this for WELL over three decades!
On that beautiful November San Francisco Sunday afternoon, I was watching the San Francisco 49ers on television and the 49ers were not doing well. And? I was “Really Getting Agitated and Upset”.
Then suddenly it “Dawned upon me!” that it was a beautiful, gorgeous, phenomenal, stunning Sunday Autumn afternoon in San Francisco and why on earth was I letting this mere sporting event upset me so much!
I then got on my bicycle, enjoyed riding across Golden Gate Park to French Hospital on 6th Avenue, and attended a 3pm afternoon meeting. During the meeting, I shared how ridiculous it was to be getting “Agitated and Upset” over a football game on a beautiful, gorgeous, phenomenal, stunning Sunday Autumn afternoon.
At that instant, I really began to look at my behavior as a Sports Fan.
At some point in time the truth dawned upon me that I MUST ACCEPT THE FACT THAT “My Team”, no matter the sport, no matter how good, cannot possibly win each and every single game that they play.
So what to do?
Ask myself: Is “My Team” IN THE GAME? Does “My Team” have a legitimate chance to win the game? IF the answer is yes, “My Team” was in the game and yes “My Team” had a legitimate chance to win the game, then if “My Team” loses the game, that is going to be as good-as-it-gets for me!

I “NAILED IT” .. I AM SO PROUD..
“Do the next Right Thing” is a phrase that I personally associate with Dr. Laura Schlessinger’s radio program. Dr. Laura often ends her radio show with the phrase, “Now, go do the next RIGHT thing!”.
Yesterday “My” Detroit Lions had a playoff game in the evening (6:20pm Arizona time). They were the top ranked team in the NFL National Football Conference.
There was a day, going way back to 1986 and earlier, that NOTHING would have kept me from watching yesterday’s game.
The problem was simple: A friend of Patti and me was giving an “Open Talk” sharing her own experience in recovery.
And I wrote in yesterday’s Post.
Our friend is far more important than the football game so we will miss (at least) the first half of “Our” Lion’s game.
And !! I WILL NOT have my smart phone with me in the meeting “sneaking peeks” at the Lions game !!

MY PERSONAL VICTORY..
I spent the afternoon at the Buses By The Bridge festival and DID NOT watch the Houston vs the Chiefs game at all.
Then..
Not only did we support our friend by sitting front and center at the evening speaker meeting, we missed not only the first half of the Lion’s game, we never even turned it on when we got home after the meeting because I published a Post about our Buses By The Bridge on our Google Blogspot website.
Later..
Danny back in Royal Oak texted me a one word text : Brutal.
I replied : What’s brutal Danny.
Danny replied : The Lions loss.

Tomorrow Patti and I plan to watch the Ravens vs the Bills and the Rams vs the Eagles because I will just enjoy the games no matter who wins and who loses.

What a personal victory “Doing the next right thing today was for me!”
Over and Out at 2:52am. It is now time to write Part 1 of this 2 part Post.

Danny is right. That game was brutal. Detroit made five turnovers.
Ah, well. Next year.
I looked at the box score of the game. At the end of the third quarter, the score was Washington 31 – 28 Lions. This was a mere 3-point difference. In other words, after three quarters, it was still a game. Bedtime 3:49am here. Cap
Your attitude re being a sports fan can apply to anything in life. BTW, how the heck did you cut the tip off your finger? And how much of it? People have differing finger lengths. On my hand, that would be almost a half inch and definitely would have involved bone.
Yes and No. There are some, maybe many, things in life, such as health issues, that require real concern. Sports are not one of them.
Gullible I hope I did “not over play” a very minor cut on the tip of my finger as I was cutting some card board with a sharp snap blade cutter that required a band aid to stop some bleeding and protect it. It was just a nuisance for three or so days. Thanks for your concern. Cap
I thought of you as I was watching the Lions game. I felt bad for the Lions fans, to have such a great year and end this way. I had hope that they could defeat the Chiefs if they both made it to the Super Bowl. I don’t feel like the remaining NFC teams could do it but I have a little hope that the Bills might. At this point, I don’t care who wins as long as it’s not the Chiefs.
Kathleen, as you may know by now, neither Patti nor I watched any (not one minute) of the Lions game. Danny, a Michigan friend and fan tipped me off to the fact the Lions had lost the game. BUT at the end of the 3rd Quarter it was Washington 31 – 28 Detroit and still very much a game. The Bills beat the Ravens yesterday so will face Kansas City WHO THEY BEAT earlier this season. We shall see huh? .. Cap and Patti
