FEB 3, 25.. Punxsutawney Phil.. Ginny’s Doll.. Dogs.. AMERICAN PIE..

Punxsutawney Phil predicts 6 more weeks of winter after waking up to see his shadow on Groundhog Day.

Punxsutawney Phil woke up on Sunday and saw his shadow, meaning we are destined for six more weeks of winter, according to legend.

Legend has it that if Punxsutawney Phil, perhaps the world’s most famous groundhog, sees his shadow then winter will continue for another six weeks, but if he does’t see his shadow spring will come early.

This makes no sense to me. You’d think IF he saw his shadow the weather was nice and Spring is coming.

Please see yesterday’s Post if you are wondering what we are talking about here.

Dogs..

We just had to find out what this is about thanks to NATIONAL TODAY / NATIONAL DAY CALENDAR Holiday.. The sources of most, but not 100%, of the information on our various “Days” such as these two “Holidays”.

If you have a dog, take the chance to hang out with your pup on National Doggy Date Night on February 3.

If you’re working all day, out running errands, or spending time with your family and loved ones. How about slowing down to spend some quality time with the one who is always there for you – your dog.

People have kept dogs as pets for 12,000 years. Throughout history, humans have benefitted from that relationship with dogs, from service dogs to police and firehouse dogs, to just everyday pets. Over the years man has grown to appreciate our relationship with dogs so much more. There are countless songs, movies, books, and TV shows built around our relationship with canines. From the timeless classic “Old Yeller” to “Lassie” and “Wonder Dog,” dogs have become more than a part of society, they’re a part of our families, and with good reason. They are steadfast companions and there are enough types (more than 150 breeds!) out there for everyone.

Dogs can live for as long as 15 years, making them a significant part of their owner’s life. For years, scientists have studied the special connection between dogs and humans, consistently finding that dogs provide social and emotional benefits for their owners, and the bond promotes positive well-being for both the owner and the dog. So they aren’t just good for your Instagram, they’re good for your health. They give us so much love and affection, it only makes sense that we return that love, right?

Fun! They don’t call them man’s best friend for nothing: dogs are loyal, protective, and always excited to see you! On this February 3, spend a little extra time with your dog: play games like fetch or frisbee, or go on a nice long hike. Go beyond the standard walks and couch snuggles and make an event out of it to make your pooch feel special!

More Fun.

AMERICAN PIE..

THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED..

February the 3rd, 1959.

Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson left unique marks that helped shape the future of the music industry.

You MUST HAVE TO KNOW the story behind Don McLean’s song American Pie.

The Day the Music Died is observed on February 3 every year. It’s the anniversary of the fatal plane crash on February the 3rd 1959, that killed three important figures in rock and roll.

Musicians Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J. P. Richardson died along with the pilot Roger Peterson in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa. In the thick of winter, the poor flight conditions led to Peterson losing control of the plane, causing it to crash and claim the lives of all four people on board.

A very personal note : In August of 1988 I was in Rochester, Minnesota, at the Mayo Clinic. I knew the story about the plane crash, so I drove down to Clear Lake, Iowa (100 miles South and West from Rochester) to view the field where they crashed and died.

The day was immortalized as The Day the Music Died by musician Don McLean, who sang about the accident in his song ‘American Pie.’

The Day the Music Died is observed on the anniversary of the day three of the best upcoming American rock and roll musicians were killed in a plane crash.

One of them was Buddy Holly, a singer-songwriter who wrote many songs during his short career and is credited with defining the rock and roll lineup of two guitars, bass, and drums. His music had a huge influence on musicians such as Bob Dylan and The Beatles.

Rock and roll pioneers, Valens, and Richardson, also known as ‘The Bopper’ were on tour in winter when they realized that they were sick and tired of the poor tour bus conditions. Long trips on the tour bus would give the performers frostbite and the flu, making it impossible for them to perform.

Holly, Valens, and Richardson were all incredible musicians who died just as their careers were about to take off. It is worth reflecting on the influence that they had on music.

The sense of loss and grief that the day symbolizes is what McLean describes in American pie. The day gives us an opportunity to work through those feelings.

The song by McLean was so popular because it carried a national meaning, and it has been described as the most successful song of the 20th century.

American Pie is one haunting song. The final verse.

I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news
But she just smiled and turned away
I went down to the sacred store
Where I’d heard the music years before
But the man there said the music wouldn’t play
And in the streets, the children screamed
The lovers cried and the poets dreamed
But not a word was spoken.
The church bells all were broken
And the three men I admire most
The Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died

Whewie!

Cap – I have seen the Buddy Holly crash site too in NE Iowa. Did you know John Lennon of Beatles was such a Holly fan that the ‘Beatles’ name was a hat tip to Holly’s “Crickets”? Tom ‘tiger’
