HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY TO ONE AND TO ALL..

Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14, and we are ready to shower our significant others with love and tokens of our affection. This day of love is celebrated in so many ways, it is always exciting to see what new traditions are included or created year after year. Whether it is elaborate engagements, intimate dinners for two, spending time with family, or just kicking back and relaxing at home, celebrate it with love.

Even though we believe that love should be spread and celebrated every day, we don’t always remember to do that. So on this dedicated day, go above and beyond in expressing your love for family, friends, and of course, your significant other.

We believe that Valentine’s Day came from the feast for the patron saint named Valentine, by the Catholic Church during the in 496 A.D. This was a way to over shadow and later replace the deemed brutal Pagan festival of Lupercalia. This festival was celebrated at the beginning of spring and paid homage to the Roman God of Agriculture, Faunus, on February 15. A goat and dog would be sacrificed symbolizing fertility and purity, respectively. This would then involve the hide of the goat being torn into strips, dipped in the sacrificial blood, and painted across the women and crops. Griuesome huh?

Despite there being many Valentines associated with the patron saints day, historians believe that the romanticized element of how Valentine’s Day is celebrated today came from a priest who was martyred by emperor Claudius II Gothicus in around 270 A.D. Varying stories talk about different St Valentines with some saying one was marrying couples in secret to prevent men going off to war, another healed the blind, and the next wrote a message to his daughter signed ‘your Valentine’. There is also a possibility that they could be the same person!

It was during the 1400s that the day was associated with romance. Messages, or ‘Valentines’ as they were called, began to appear. Hand written letters and poems declaring affections of love became more and more popular. In the mid-1800s, Valentine’s cards began to be commercially produced and traditional gifts were candy and flowers, especially red roses symbolizing love and beauty.

Today, Valentine’s Day has become inclusive of friends and family to show how much you care and love them. Companies have seized the opportunity to fit their products and services into the Valentine’s Day period to benefit from the sales boost, as it continues to grow each year.

VALENTINE’S DAY IS LESS POPULAR AMONG MEN THAN WOMEN
While 13% of men say Valentine’s Day is their favorite holiday, 8% of men absolutely hate it. Meanwhile, 13% of women claim Valentine’s Day is their favorite holiday, compared to just 5% who hate it.

WOMEN ENJOY THE SINGLE LIFE MORE THAN MEN DO
Only 9% of women are single and actively searching for a boyfriend, compared to 13% of men who say they are single and want a girlfriend.
VALENTINE’S DAY ISN’T JUST FOR UNMARRIED PEOPLE
Although 19% of married Americans admit that Valentine’s Day was a much bigger deal before they were married, 46% still celebrate Valentine’s Day with their spouse.

Today is a day that celebrates love, yes, but it’s also Library Lover’s Day on February 14, dedicated to book lovers across the globe. The day honors libraries and the amazing life-changing books they hold within them. Before you ask why libraries need to be celebrated, digest this fact — there was a time when libraries didn’t exist! The word ‘library’ is actually a Latin word that literally means ‘a place that stores books.’ Therefore, libraries were simply places appointed by the state to ‘stock’ books and important manuscripts for the longest time.

Library Lovers’ Day was initially started in Australia in 2006 by the State Library of New South Wales (NSW). The day became a national holiday in 2007 when the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) joined in on the campaign to promote their passion for books. Though the aim was to raise awareness regarding the services some great libraries offer, the day soon became one that provided solace to those who were ‘dateless’ on V-Day.

Today, Library Lover’s Day is celebrated internationally with a new theme every year! For instance, in 2018 Bond University’s John & Alison Kearney Library went all out and celebrated the day with a flashy display of a vintage typewriter, pens, and paper. The items were placed so visitors could write love letters to a special someone or their favorite library.

In 2019, ALIA (Australian Library and Information Association) introduced the theme ‘Library Love Stories,’ which also included a fictional story writing competition about finding love in the library. The same year, #LibraryLoversDay was also trending on Twitter. In 2020, the South Perth Libraries organized an event where people had to fill out a ‘Matchmaking Form’ and the library staff recommended the readers books and authors they may fall in love with based on their personality traits. Talk about a match made in heaven!

Do some good and organize an event at a library that welcomes children suffering from disabilities and life-threatening diseases. The aim is to partner up with a child and introduce them to your favorite book and its storyline.

In China, the library was called ‘building storing books’ before the official term was introduced.

The largest library in the world is the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., stocks more than 39 million books.

The most libraries per capita in the world is The city of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom that has the most libraries per 100,000 people in the world — 60.5.

Libraries serve as educational resources. Even in the day and age of Google, a library still serves as an essential educational resource to students. This is because libraries stock books and manuscripts that are not even available online.

You can read an otherwise unaffordable book if you don’t have enough money to spend on novels or research books. All you need is a membership to a well-stocked library and you can read any book of your choice. Plus point: It won’t cost you an arm and a leg!

Libraries provide silence. Not everyone resides in households that provide hours of silence required to conduct research and write papers. During times like these, libraries play an essential role, especially for students who reside in dorm rooms.
