NATIONAL UNFRIEND DAY..

Patti and I are just not in sync with the younger generation. We two had no idea what Unfriending a Friend is.

So when we saw the below NATIONAL TODAY Holiday we did a “Double Take”.

So we decided to “Check Out National Unfriend Day”.

And we were greeted with..

Thank you Jimmy Kimmel, gentleman and scholar, for creating National Unfriend Day on November 17.

I said to myself, “Who is Jimmy Kimmel?”

I checked him out on Google and Wikipedia.

James Christian Kimmel (born November 13, 1967) is an American television host and comedian. He is best known as the host and executive producer of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, which has aired on ABC since 2003. Kimmel has hosted the Primetime Emmy Awards three times, in 2012, 2016 and 2020, and the Academy Awards four times, in 2017, 2018, 2023, and 2024.

At 23 seasons he has the longest tenure of any current late-night television host in the United States.

His tenure hosting a single late-night comedy-variety show is second only to Johnny Carson, who hosted The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson for 30 seasons. Patti and I have indeed heard of, and watched many times, The Johnny Carson Show!

There have got to be at least some of you who are thinking,

“Captain have you been living under a rock? Jimmy Kimmel is famous!”

On November 17, 2010, Jimmy Kimmel went on his nightly talk show to announce that it was National Unfriend Day.

Please join us on this day of self-care to celebrate by simplifying our connections online and unfriending any and everyone who does not add joy to your online, social networking experience.

After years of adding social networks and hoarding friends, in 2010 we reached a cultural terminal velocity in how many connections we can sustain. Now it’s time to clean house. 

Does your friend from elementary school who you haven’t spoken to in twenty years really need to be your Facebook friend? Do you really want to see the Instagram posts of that guy you met in line for the bathroom at that party in college? How about that center for your favorite basketball team that you follow on Twitter who retired three years ago. Do you really need to stay in touch with your lab partner from 10th grade?

Clean out your social networks and unfriend anyone who doesn’t spark joy.
