I, Your Captain, bit off far more than I could chew here!
Feast (a LOT of Holidays.. Fifty One 51 Holidays for March 21) or Famine (very few IF any Holidays we are interested in).
Here we go, let’s see how it unfolds.
We’ll start with Patti and her love of flowers.

National Flower Day is on March 21 every year, right after the first official spring day.
Few things can uplift spirits the way flowers do.
The earliest connection between flowers and their importance to humans dates back to the paleolithic age with the discovery of flower fossils. Similarly, gifting flowers has always been central to life and culture. Across civilizations, flowers would feature prominently in ancient myths and stories. The Ancient Greeks revered flowers and associated them with several Gods.
The real focus here is on pre-cut flowers for gifts not so much on planting flowers as Patti so loves to do in early summer.

By now, most of you who follow us, know that I was actively involved in Automobile Racing making it to the Big Time. My last team was with Richard Petty, doubtlessly the most famous NASCAR Driver ever.
But one does not begin at the tippy top.
International Sports Car Racing Day celebrated on the third Saturday of March every year.
While stationed in Hawaii (1958-59) in the United States Marine Corps, a fellow Marine, Tom Jennings, had an MG Sports Car.
I loved to ride with Tom in his MG. So began my interest in Sports Cars. I have owned three Triumps.
While at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, 1960 to 1963, I became friends with Bill Salo, who worked at his Dad’s gas station. I got him interested in Sports Cars. He went on to begin to race them. So I got interested in Sports Car Racing. Bill became an SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) National Champion in the Class H Sports Car Racing Category.
The 12 Hours of Sebring (it was originally 24 hours), 24 Hours of Daytona, and 24 Hours of Le Mans are widely considered the trifecta of sports car racing.

I, your Captain, really love and enjoy and have memorized some Poems, especially those written by Robert W. Service.
World Poetry Day, is celebrated on March 21.

I find it very interesting how many NATIONAL TODAY Holidays are the result of various United Nations actions.
We believe the first known poem appeared 4,000 years ago in Babylon.

I have already began to close some of my own credit card accounts, that I have not used for several years, so this interested me personally!
Credit Card Reduction Day takes place on March 21 each year.
In the 1920s, credit cards originated in the United States when oil companies and some hotels started to give them to customers for purchases at their outlets. In 1950, the first universal credit card was introduced by the Diners’ Club and was used at various places. A version of this card was also introduced by the American Express Company in 1958. The American Express credit card would be used for travel and entertainment purposes. The credit card companies started charging the cardholders an annual fee and billing them monthly.
This Holiday is mainly aimed at people with severe credit card debts.

At our current stage of life, Patti and I REALLY APPRECIATE having others hold doors open for us. Amazingly, many MANY people do this for Patti and me.
Call a friend you haven’t had the chance to talk to lately, buy them a cup of coffee, or help them with something they are having difficulties with.

Bingo!!
The day celebrates the human memory and all that it can achieve.
Truth..
Your memory may not be as good as you think. Keeping multiple reminders and lists on your phone and notebooks, writing on your hand in a sharpie, and walking into a room feeling like you forgot something are things that we all do!!
It is also a day to draw attention to the issues caused by memory loss through diseases and conditions like Alzheimer’s and Dementia, which affects thousands of people.

You aren’t kidding with lots of holidays today! The 2 that resonate with me are Flower Day and Memory Day. Both precious commodities in this life. For flowers I sure feel this false spring. It was -2f Monday, and over 80f the past two days as is also forecast for today. Maybe rain tonight. Oh how I want to garden! I’ll start some seeds this week, marigolds and another flower mix. In a few weeks I’ll start veggies and herbs by seed. Some things will come up again in my planters moved from Spearfish, so that is always fun. I had nice zinnias, lemongrass and sunflowers as well as strawberries. We’ll see in a few months what is in store. I’ll love to see what Patti plants when you get back to Anchorage which I presume is still under a bit of snow.
Happy Spring to you guys from way over here on the prarie, and oh I forgot, Happy Memory Day! Just trying to keep our brains strong over here with board games, reading, knitting and training animals. Having a notepad and a schedule really works for me.
