June 27, 1880, is the birthday of Helen Keller in Tuscumbia, Alabama.

Assumptions are so risky. Patti and I “assume” that, if not all of you, many of you know about Helen Keller.

Helen Keller lost both her sight and her hearing and the ability to speak at 19 months from a bacterial meningitis. This amazing lady went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Radcliffe College with honors in 1904, write 14 books, and become one of the most influential advocates for disability rights in history.

No story about Helen Keller is complete without Anne Sullivan who was her devoted teacher and lifelong companion.

Anne Sullivan was a young teacher who had suffered vision impairment herself. Beginning in 1887, Sullivan used “touch teaching” techniques and her skilled guidance calmed the seemingly uncontrollable Keller. Keller learned how to read and write in Braille thanks to Sullivan’s own experiences that gave her a deeper understanding of her student’s struggles. Keller also used hand signals of the deaf-mute, which she understood by touch.

Anne Sullivan (April 14, 1866 – October 20, 1936) unlocked the world of language for Helen Keller allowing her to break free from her isolation.

On June 1, 1968, Keller died in Easton, Connecticut, at age 87. Her legacy of civil service and a resilient spirit is everlasting. The presidential proclamation of Helen Keller Day was made in 2006, as well as many notable international organizations that help the blind and deaf.
