OCT 6, 26.. NOODLE DAY.. GERMAN-AMERICAN DAY..

Two NATIONAL TODAY Holidays caught our attention today.

Patti picked right up on National Noodle Day so we will begin there!

NATIONAL NOODLE DAY..

Let’s begin with the the below question!!

The oldest historical mention of noodles appears in a dictionary from the third century A.D. in China. The earliest noodles were shaped into little bits, formed from bread dough, and thrown into a Wok (a deep Chinese cooking pan) of boiling water. It’s difficult to pinpoint exactly when and where noodles originated.

Noodles have been with mankind in nearly every culture, making noodles one of the planets most widely eaten foods.

Both the Italians (we are not clear why the Italians are in the mix) and the Chinese lay claim to inventing the noodle.

Our (Patti and myself) all time favorite noodles are Singapore Rice Noodles! No other noodles are even close! In various countries around the world we have been attracted to finding a Chinese or Oriental restaurant, specifically in search of a Singapore Rice meal. Once in Singapore itself, we sought out just such a restaurant, only to find it not listed on the menu. The next thing we knew, an older man approached our table and the man asked if we were the customers asking about Singapore Rice Noodles. We confirmed we were. He said he owned the restaurant and he, himself, would make Singapore Rice Noodles for us, and he did!! It has not been unusual in other restaurants in our travels that they have not been on the menu, but the chef was willing to make Singapore Rice Noodles for us and did!!

In Hong Kong, China.

It’s fun to see several noodle photos show the use of Chinese Chop Sticks!

GERMAN-AMERICAN DAY..

I am the one who wanted to take a look at GERMAN-AMERICAN Day.

My family tree, as well as Patti’s, do not include any German Ancestry.

BUT, my family was with me when I worked four years in (West) Germany from July 1974 until September 1978. So I have a very real “Feel” for Germany!!

Also, perhaps some of you may be interested IF you have German Ancestors in your Family Tree.  One of our close friends and followers whom we call “Small Bär” IS German!!

National German-American Day unfolds every October 6th.,

This Holiday commemorates the arrival of the first German immigrants in America. This day celebrates the enduring impact of German culture on American society, from language to cuisine. This Holiday explores the history, traditions, and contributions of German-Americans across the nation.

In 1608, there were several Germans among the Jamestown settlers. German immigrants arrived in more significant numbers around 1670, when they chose to settle overwhelmingly in Pennsylvania, which has the largest number of German-Americans in the United States.

Germans brought the custom of Christmas trees, the delicious Hamburger and the Pretzel, as well as Kindergarten to the United States.

German-Americans now make up the largest self-reported ancestry group, which is around 44.2 million.
