JAN 29, 19 (Part 1 of 2) .. OUR TRUCK HAS BEEN STOLEN IN ANCHORAGE, ALASKA .. AND I FELL TODAY

I told Patti that I feel safer from such violence here in Russian Siberia, or in Hong Kong, China, or in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, than I feel in Anchorage, Alaska. For me this is an honest and true feeling.

I am not however safer here in Russian Siberia, or in Hong Kong, China, or in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, from falling on my face.

Four (4) times count them, our truck has been illegally entered. Twice violently via broken / smashed in windows. Twice by I don’t know what mechanism was used.

This, on the anniversary of one of the most important dates in my life : January 29th 1958, now sixty one (61) years ago, I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.

Stolen truck and all that entails ..

Patti plans to be on the plane flying first to Seattle, Washington, February 7th and then on to Seoul, South Korea, February 10th arriving into Seoul on February 11th.

Does even The Shadow Know what is coming next in our lives?

As careful as I am trying to be, THIS evening, the one thing that I dread happening to me happened !! I took a violent fall.

My fall was ..

In the dark of a cold and snowy Siberian night.

It was at the Irkutsk Railway Station. I’d just gotten off the train.

And ..

And ?

Envelope Please :

Are you all ready for this?

I was ..

Sitting in / and I was being pushed as I sat in a ..

Wheelchair !

“Captain! Oh Captain! When it IS your time Captain, it IS your time!”

As I was being pushed by a railway attendant, suddenly the wheels of my wheel chair violently dipped into a deep hole or a trench on the railway platform. I was instantly and I was violently thrown forward with a speed and a force I could never ever have imagined was about to happen. As I shot face-forward I managed to get both of my gloved-hands out in front of me. Kerpow! I hit the ground on my chest and slid forward on the icy snow covered surface.

I was lucky. I fell, not from a fully vertical position but from a lower sitting position. I was lucky! I was adept enough to get my hands out in front of me and did not hit my face or head (which I certainly could have done) on the ground. I was lucky that I slid / skidded on the snow and ice. I did not come to a sudden violent stop on dry pavement that could have propelled my face and head into the ground.

All that I ‘injured’ was my left palm in the fleshy area below my left thumb. My knees ‘sort of ‘ hurt but are OK. My back ‘sort of ‘ hurt but that too is OK.

IT is nice to be back home here in Irkusk.

And? We are both still smiling ..

I am wiped out after being awake all night, dealing with the stolen vehicle, and then getting just a little less than a 3 hour nap. You are on the ground after a 12 hour train ride … and then, LITERALLY ON THE GROUND being pitched out of the wheelchair. We are both lucky. Your fall could have been worse and I am lucky the stealing of the car was not confrontational to me having been in the car. SO looking forward to us being together soon! Rest up and recharge in your Irkutsk ‘home/apartment”. Take some well-deserved deep breaths … Love and hugs, Patti

What a great job you’ve done dealing with the truck being stolen and on little or no rest. You were tired before this DRAMA struck because you went to sleep involuntarily while you were waiting up to hear that I’d arrived safely here into Irkutsk. I know how much you like to be up and awake when I arrive even at 3:30am your time in the early morning.

I just awoke after a nap of well over an hour and a half. Now I need to go out and put money on my cell phone before I can call the police myself. It’ll be over U.S. $1 per minute to call from here.

Thanks for looking this Post over for me. Much love .. Cap

Perhaps you feel safer there because you are usually on the move, i.e., not staying in one place long enough to learn about the crime around you.

    Perhaps.

On the other hand, Anchorage has become a dangerous place to live with all the crime and no or light punishments. No bail. No way to secure a criminal will show up to face his sentence. And it isn’t just east side anymore, but all over. We’ve had car thefts and break ins down here by people passing through.

When the crooks no longer fear being punished, things go to heck in a hurry.

Glad you weren’t hurt in your wheelchair fall. Now, that would have been something to crow about!!!

No question there IS crime here. In all of my years of international travel I’ve only felt its sting several times but feel it I have. Especially theft issues on the trains by professional criminals who will pay money to be in first class coaches to steal from first class coach occupants.

Taking a fall while riding in a wheelchair so I won’t take a fall walking on the snow and icy stair steps. GO FIGURE that out huh?

Thanks for you comments. Odd that I do NOT hear our current (conservative right leaning) president talking about stricter measures of punishment concerning crime and criminals in our daily lives and not just those criminals crossing our southern borders from Mexico. Cap

I’m catching up on your posts. I always enjoy reading your posts, whether it’s about your travel, words of wisdom, or off the wall thoughts. I also like seeing writings from both of you on here more now, that’s fun! On the crime issue, I agree the upswing seemed to coincide with the change in Alaska state law that eased up on punishments for crime, especially first time offenders. I think we might see some change on that soon with the new administration, we’ll see.
So excited for you and Aunt Patti to reunite in Seoul!

It is fun, and it is a great help to me, to have Patti backing-me-up here Eryn. So happy, as your time allows, that you are actively aware of, and following along here. Me too, it will be fun to have her here with me. Smiles .. Cap
