FEB 25, 23 .. A ROCK .. THE PATIENT .. A HARD SPOT

By the way, I have discussed the below issue with some Mayo Clinic medical personnel. All agreed with my thinking. No matter what your decision is, there could be side effects / adverse reactions.

– – – – – – – –

Food-for-thought.

What I am going to discuss, is a direct result of one of our closest friends and allies who commented about the “side effects” of my upcoming medical procedure.

“Cap, why are you having an Upper Endoscopy Procedure? Don’t you realize that recent studies have found that general anesthesia when used on the elderly, can increase the risk of dementia and the development of neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s disease?”

The above appears to be absolutely accurate. So too are the listed and published Side Effects / Adverse Reactions from many (IF not most) prescription drugs.

What’s the answer?

It is a no-brainer ! You only have two options. You the patient are between A Rock And A Hard Spot.

When you are prescribed medicines / prescription drugs, or a medical procedure you MUST (1) TAKE the medication / the prescriptions / undergo the procedure or (2) REFUSE them.

NO MATTER WHICH DECISION YOU MAKE .. (1) take the medication(s) / the prescription(s) / opt for the medical procedure or (2) don’t take the medication(s) / the prescription(s) refuse the medical procedure.

You have arrived :

Between A Rock And A Hard Spot

You are Damned If You Do / Damned If You Don’t.

I am NOT going to discuss the side effects / adverse reactions when you OPT TO TAKE the medications or undergo the medical procedure. There is no question, there is no debate, there may be side effects / adverse reactions.

I am going to point out the side effects / adverse reactions if you REFUSE to take the medicines or refuse to undergo the medical procedure.

THE SIDE EFFECT / ADVERSE REACTION OF OPTING NOT TO UNDER GO AN UPPER ENDOSCOPY PROCEDURE :

I do not learn, I do not become aware of, the interior condition of my throat and esophagus.

Because I won’t have any idea of my condition, I will NOT find out that perhaps I have a pre-cancerous condition, or worse yet, I have an active cancerous condition that I don’t know about because I refused to undergo the Upper Endoscopy Procedure.

Side Effect : Possible death due to cancer.

So I have opted to accept the suggestion of my Mayo Clinic Gastroenterologist and undergo the Upper Endoscopy Procedure. And yes! I will risk the side effects of the anesthesia.

Back on Monday, January the 30th, when I was in the Emergency Room in Lake Havasu City with my ear crisis, the E.R. Doctor prescribed Augmentin for me to avoid a possible infection. I have steadfastly REFUSED to take the Augmentin because for one entire year I have been taking probiotics and the Augmentin would kill them. So yes I risked the side effect of an infection by refusing to take the Augmentin.

I rest my case. I am opting to learn the interior condition of my esophagus.

Best wishes. Yes, we are often caught between a rock and a hard place as seniors. Each of us has to make decisions based on what’s the best for us in our current situation, and whether our symptoms justify the chance of negative side effects.

Having seen first hand what happened to my husband, anesthesia is something I fear as I too had a temporary reaction in the past.

Here’s to your successful upper GI exam.

Thanks Gullible. Yep. No matter what, yea or nay, we risk “side effects / adverse reactions”. Here is another three word statement : Damn The Torpedoes ! Also Gullible, one has to trust one’s doctors. IF the risks outweigh the benefits I would hope my doctor would explain them. As always, in all ways, thanks for your interest and support. Cap

Cap, you’re very reasonable and wise. I absolutely support your decision and motivational component!
    Good luck!
My warm and strong hugs to you both! ♥ ♥
