JUL 17, 23 .. DOTNET AND “THE STARFISH STORY” AND FROSTBITE FRANK

Today, Monday the 17th of July, one of our close friends, Frostbite Frank, will be undergoing a complicated, multi-hour (12 or more) surgery on his spine. Several (I believe three) highly skilled surgeons will use space-age medical devices as they perform the surgery. The Doctors will be able to see what they are doing using three-dimensional views as they operate on his spine. Frank “checks into the hospital” this morning in California around 5:30am.

From Frank : Grazie, compadres! They don’t make it easy. I have to take 2 showers with Chlorhexadine tomorrow, eat a normal dinner, drink 2 bottles of Ensure at 11:30pm, drink 1 bottle of Ensure at 3:30am, take 2 showers before 5am, and report to the checkin place at 5:30am.

The Starfish Story .. By: Loren Eiseley

One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy picking up and gently throwing things into the ocean.

Approaching the boy he asked, “Young man, what are you doing?”

“Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die,” the boy replied.

The man laughed to himself and said, “Do you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can’t make any difference.”

After listening politely, the boy bent down to pick up another starfish and threw it into the surf. Then, he smiled at the man and said, “I made a difference to that one.”

Moral: Everyone can make a difference — even if that difference affects just one person.

Yes we know. Yes we understand. Not all of you following along here with us on dotnet, are able to check our site daily. So since you may not know about the past several days we’ll briefly update you.

Over the past three days, after arriving in the San Diego Metro Area (Frank flew down late last Tuesday night JUL 11 on a “red eye” flight) Frank has texted Patti and me several times about a field trip he made to the San Diego Union Newspaper in 1960 when he was in the 6th Grade!

You may want to check our dotnet Posts dated JUL 13, 14, 15 and 16, 2023.

At first (JUL 13 and 14) we got very little interest in the topic under Frank’s new category of : ETAOIN SHRDLU a term having to do with the printing of newspapers using Linotype Machines.

Then Gullible and Michael “jumped in” with comments and I continued forward right up until now JUL 15, 16 and 17.

Like the Starfish Story, if ONLY Frank has benefitted from all of our considerable back-and-forth banter, then we are happy. I KNOW Patti and I sure were intrigued and we really enjoyed Frank’s stories as seems to be the case with Gullible and Michael.
