Hi Ginny. It was Patti who did NOT walk up 612 steps. I walked each, and I walked every single step Ginny. Otherwise you are correct, how did I get the photos. I went back and clarified this in the Post Ginny. Thanks so very much for reading the long blogspot Post Ginny. Smiling .. Cap

Heavy rain had been drenching the small village of Moose Pass for days one October. When the phone rang after midnight and my husband answered it, I knew from his conversation that someone was in trouble.

Donning warm clothes and his rain suit, Ken loaded up his gas-powered water pump and its 2″ hoses and left to help a widow whose basement was taking on water. Its depth was five feet and rising by the time he got there and set up the pump.

Once it was running and expelling water from her basement, he took a shovel and dug a temporary diversion ditch to divert the water from her home. It would later be improved when it was daylight. Hani made coffee and the two of them sat in her kitchen and began to talk.

We didn’t know Hani well, only that she was widowed when her famed husband Ottokar passed away after a long illness. He was legendary in Germany as a big game guide and outfitter here in Moose Pass. Hunters from Germany and across Europe came to this remote area to hunt moose, bears, and caribou.

As the pump worked its way through the water in the basement, their talk turned to motorcycles. Hani brought out albums and photographs. They depicted the many motorcycle races won by both Ottokar and Hani during the second and third decades of the 1900s in Germany and Europe.

They eventually left Europe and landed in Moose Pass, where Ottokar became successful as a guide and outfitter. His book about hunting bears was famous with German hunters.

Many hours later, Hana’s basement was empty of water. Ken came home, in wonder at this tiny lady who had defied convention and raced motorcycles at a time when few women wore pants or slacks.thinking, he said, of buying a snowmachine, but knowing that she would have a devil of a time if she got stuck, she opted instead for cross country skis. She was, at the time, well into her senior years.

Later that day, Ken took heaters and fans to her house to help the drying process.
