Patti? How could I not publish this “Holiday”?

November 5 is National Redhead Day. It is every redhead’s chance to shine with each gorgeous strand of their red hair. Redheads are often treated like the odd man (or woman) out, as they possess the rarest of hair colors. Plus, redheads are described as “fiery” and “hot-tempered.”

If you have red hair, today is your day to be however way you want!

National Redhead Day is also known as Love Your Red Hair Day in the United States, the United Kingdom and other parts of the world. Although the rest of we brunettes and blondes may throw a little shade (pun intended), people with red hair get this one day to celebrate their rarest of hair colors.

We have two redhead sisters to thank for coming up with Love Your Red Hair Day or National Redhead Day. In 2011, Adrienne and Stephanie Vendetti wanted people to be proud of their red hair. 

 On National Redhead Day, rock your hair any way you like and hold your flame-colored head up proudly!

Red hair occurs naturally in roughly one to two percent of the population, with a higher frequency of redheads found in Northern or Northwestern Europe.

Whilst redheads have often been in the minority, the culture of celebrating their uniqueness has developed and matured in recent times. In 2005 a Redhead Day festival was launched in The Netherlands, which attracts visitors from over 80 different countries, all redheads, of course.

Some Tid-Bits..

It’s all about genetics. If both your parents were born with the mutated MC1R gene on Chromosome 16, you’re probably a redhead. But, you can still be born with red hair even if neither of your parents has it. Even if one of your parents is a redhead, there’s one chance in two that their child may be red-haired.

As mentioned above, red hair occurs naturally in roughly one to two percent of the population.  

Redheads are definitely easier to spot in a crowd. We love how bright their hair is and how much they stand out from the crowd.

Time to phone your friends and get the old pigskin out, because November 5 is American Football Day. Sure, they could have just called it Football Day, but if we want the rest of the world to join in on the festivities, we should probably be more specific. American Football Day celebrates the U.S.A’s most popular sport and reminds us all that it’s mid-season and we should probably check on our fantasy teams. Rugby and soccer both paved the way for American football in the late 1800s. Yale grad Walter Camp gets the credit for pushing innovative rule changes including the line of scrimmage, down-and-distance rules (i.e. “1st and 10”), and the legalization of blocking. Later, coaches like Knute Rockne and Amos Alonzo Stagg capitalized on the new “forward pass” play. College football took off well before the pro version in the early 1900s as Bowl games attracted a national audience for college teams. The NCAA version remains immensely popular today — with media coverage easily rivaling that of the NFL.

The pre-NFL American Professional Football Association began in 1920. Things grew quickly on the pro side. The NFL had grown to 25 teams by the mid 20s. Then several prominent college stars joined the NFL, most notably the University of Illinois’ Red Grange, giving the NFL a boost.

More teams entered the league during the 1950s. The 1958 NFL Championship Game, known as “The Greatest Game Ever Played,” changed everything. The Baltimore Colts and the New York Giants, meeting at Yankee Stadium,  played the first “sudden death” overtime game in NFL history. Tied after 60 minutes of play, it became the first NFL game to go into sudden death overtime. The final score was Colts 23, Giants 17. NBC broadcast the game live; many believe this set the stage for America’s current NFL frenzy.
