Thanks to NATIONAL TODAY / NATIONAL DAY CALENDAR.. Who are the sources of most, but not 100%, of the information on our various “Days” such as the below today.

JET LAG..

We were curious just what National Today would have to say about Jet Lag. Something that not only Patti and me, but many of us, know about first hand.

So here we go with Jet Lag.

Ever struggled with jet lag?

On January 17, we celebrate National Lose the Jet Lag Day. As we start making travel plans for the year ahead, it’s the perfect day to learn more about jet lag science and how to “timeshift” to adjust more quickly to new time zones so you can experience more fulfilling and productive travel.

Jet lag is caused when the sleep-wake and light-dark cycle shifts too quickly for the circadian clock in your brain to keep up, disrupting almost all biological systems in your body, and often making the start and end of any trip feel exhausting.

On National Lose the Jet Lag Day, we acknowledge jet lag’s significant human and financial costs – from poor concentration and reduced productivity to less enjoyment and weakened immune function.

The key to beating jet lag the scientific way is to properly time light exposure and light avoidance, which are the most important time cues for resetting the circadian clock.

One suggestion is to ese the Timeshifter app to create personalized jet lag plans based on your sleep pattern, chronotype, itinerary, and personal preferences. The app was developed with world-renowned scientists based on the latest research in sleep and circadian neuroscience. Based on more than 60,000 post-flight surveys, travelers who followed Timeshifter’s advice versus travelers who didn’t follow their Timeshifter plan were 16 times less likely to report very severe jet lag.

There are several symptoms of jet lag, including: fatigue, sleepiness, digestive upsets, impaired judgment and decision-making, memory lapses, irritability, apathy, and weakened immune function. These symptoms often result in reduced productivity, compromised safety, and less enjoyment.

Whether you travel east or west depends on your chronotype: night owls (75% of people) find it easier to travel west as they delay their circadian clock, while early birds (25%) find it easier to travel east as they advance their clock.

Sleep meds might knock you out on the flight, or help you fall asleep faster in the hotel, but they don’t shift the circadian clock and could lead you to miss seeing light at the right time, which is the real scientific solution to tackling the underlying cause of jet lag.

Surprising to many, light is the most important time cue for resetting your circadian clock and managing when to see light and when to avoid light is critical to adapting to new time zones quickly.

Drink water.. Long-distance travel can cause dehydration and proper hydration can help manage jet lag symptoms and travel fatigue.

There you have a few tips along with some interesting information.

MORE SPICY FOOD..

Yesterday we had..

Today we have..

Chili lovers celebrate National Hot Heads Chili Day on January 17 every year.

On this day, chili heads, heat-seekers, and extreme eaters try out the spiciest chilis. National Hot Heads Chili Day is celebrated with habanero-eating challenges, fancy-dress contests, and cook-offs of popular recipes. Chilis are also made to take the official Scoville heat scale. This doesn’t mean that you have to be a daredevil to celebrate the day — anyone who likes their meal a little hot can celebrate the day! Spices and chilis add a distinct flavor to the dish. Thai, Indian, Creole and Caribbean dishes are famous for their heat content and boast of some excellent gastronomic experiences!

We don’t quite know how National Hot Heads Chili Day came to be but it’s safe to say that one fine day all the chili lovers got together and decided to celebrate hot and spicy food. This makes sense given how humans have always had a knack for chilis in their food — the first recipes for spicy foods go back to 6,000 years! This means that humans have been enjoying spicy food for quite some time. While the foods that we enjoy today may have changed and recipes altered, we still love spicy food. Unlike other animals, humans prefer spicy food simply because it tastes so incredible and on a plus side, spices also offer several health benefits.

Spices such as turmeric and cumin that have powerful antimicrobial and antioxidant properties can kill bacteria outright. Studies show that the capsaicin in hot peppers can reduce inflammation and decrease the chances of heart disease. It can also aid in weight loss. In Ayurvedic medicine, the inflammatory properties of chilis have brought relief from many different conditions, such as headaches, autoimmune disorders, and arthritis. Spicy foods can also help fasten your metabolism. Studies also show that certain spices, like pepper chilies, turmeric, cinnamon, and cumin can curb your appetite and improve your metabolic resting rate. Who knew chilis could be so versatile!
