JAN 29TH, 25 .. AN IMPORTANT DATE IN MY LIFE..
Back. Way Back I go in my mind to January the 29th 1958. Like today, it was also a Wednesday.
I doubt very much that, unless I die today and I have no plans to “Check Out” today, Wednesday, January the 29th, 2025, will not bring me a day of importance to even come close to matching that Wednesday, January the 29th, 1958, sixty seven (67) years ago.
On that long ago day, I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.
I emphasize the word enlisted.
At the time (Wednesday the 29th of January 1958) I had successfully completed three and one half years (3-1/2) of studies at the University of Michigan. I was “more than eligible” to apply for Officer’s Candidate School to get a commission.
I did NOT want a commission. I wanted to experience “life in the ranks” of the Marine Corps and not be some “Boot Ass” College ROTC 2nd Lieutenant, perhaps the most despised rank in the U. S. Military because that 21 year old “College Boy” is immediately “over and in charge” of men who may have 20 or more years experience in the military.
I got what I was after and what I wanted.
Six and a half years “down the road”, I became a Commissioned Officer in the United States Navy Sea Bees. After six and a half years as an enlisted Marine, with my Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering, and six and a half years as an enlisted man, I was well fit and suited for my commission!
So what’s the big deal here?
My decision to enlist in the Marine Corps was the best single decision of my entire life right up to this instant.
I have had other former Marines agree with me as to their lives.
My father was in the Coast Guard. My eldest son was in the Army. My youngest son was in the Air Force. I was in the Marines and the Naval Service. As a family, we have touched all of the military services.
Proud to have served.
