APR 12, 25.. PETS.. BIG WINDS..

Yesterday was National Pet Day and we published a Post about Pets.

Well! Hello NATIONAL TODAY.. Look what you came up with today!

Yet another Pet.

Hamster Day on April 12 is dedicated to these cute little rodents who are among the favorite pets in the United States!

And Yes Oh Yes. Growing up, I had several Hamsters and I really enjoyed them. Don’t ask me why, but I always called them “Hambolians”. Each also had individual names.

It’s no wonder spell check doesn’t have the word Hambolian!

But! I did Google Hambolian and there is a person named: Wezza Fadlonsah Hambolian! She’s on Facebook so I can’t go any further with that name.

Yes, hamsters are adorable and easy to raise. All you need is a love for animals, and the dedication to ensure all the pet’s needs are met. Do you want to get a hamster for your kid but are not sure how to raise one? Well, this is exactly what this day is about. Learn all that you can about hamsters today and show the world why they are the best pets ever!

Hamsters are a part of the history of this world and they are recorded to have existed for nearly 11.2 million to 16.4 million years during the Middle Miocene Epoch in Europe and North Africa. Their presence in Asia extends from six million to 11 million years. Unfortunately, over time, at least four of the different hamster species have become extinct, one of which had lived in North Africa during the Middle Miocene period.

A breed of Syrian hamsters was considered to be extinct until a mother hamster, with her babies was discovered in 1930. The discovery was made by biologist Israel Aharoni, who had launched an expedition near the ancient city of Aleppo to find Syrian hamsters. He had heard the stories of a ‘golden hamster’ and had made it his aim to research the creature.

GET THIS!

Though Aharoni was not fond of travel, he believed the hamster species needed to be found. After searching for days with a local hunter, Aharoni discovered a litter of Syrian hamsters. As the pets were detained, the team noticed that the wild mother hamster began to eat her litter. It is a horrifying aspect of the innocent pet’s nature. The baby hamsters that survived the mother were bred into the colony, and the rest is history!

All domestic golden hamsters in the U.K. and the U.S. now descend from that one captured in 1930 by Israel Aharoni.

Patti likes to say that she “Loves Weather”. BUT, IF “pressed”, she will admit her “least favorite weather” is .. Taa Daa .. Wind because it makes her feel anxious and tense.

NATIONAL TODAY.. BIG WIND DAY..

Big Wind Day is observed each year in the United States on April 12.

The day commemorates the recording of the highest natural wind gust measured on the Earth’s surface. It was on the afternoon of April 12, 1934, that..

Winds blowing at 231 miles per hour were recorded by Mount Washington Observatory.

Mount Washington is the highest peak in the Northeastern United States at 6,288 ft. It is said to be the most notable mountain east of the Mississippi River. While it is difficult to say if the day will receive strong winds as it did in 1934, one can still expect that it will be windy on Mount Washington. It was from the Mount Washington Observatory where observers Wendell Stephenson, Alexander McKenzie, and Salvadore Pagliuca reported the record-breaking wind gusts in 1934. In 1984, the observers returned to the observatory to celebrate the event’s 50th anniversary!

The record of 231 miles per hour held for several decades. However, this record was broken in 1996. A typhoon struck a small island off of Australia with wind gusts of 256 mph.

The windiest place on Earth is Antarctica. Wind speeds on the continent often exceed 100 mph each winter.

What are the least windy states? The top five least windy states are Mississippi, Florida, Kentucky, Georgia, and Alabama.

Windmills are often associated with Holland but date back as far as Ancient China in 2000 B.C.

A single wind turbine has around 8,000 different parts.

Hawaii has the world’s largest wind turbine. It stands 20 stories tall and has blades the length of a football field.

We Googled it (via BBC news) and the crisis seems to have eased up. Yes they were predicting gale force winds of 93mph and, for the first time in a decade, this has happened. But now, Saturday afternoon here, the winds in Beijing are a mere 12mph that could approach 19mph. Nice comment. Thanks. Cap and Patti

The turbines always look small because I am some distance away, so the first time I was close to a truck carrying a blade, I was a bit stunned. We have a fair amount of wind turbines here in northern California and when I pass them on the freeway, they seem to move slowly if at all.

I always thought that North Dakota should have tons of them because the wind seems brutal and endless there. Years ago, some were purchased (USED!) from somewhere in CA. The first winter they froze. The engines were designed for CA weather. An expensive lesson!

I had several hamsters growing up. Cute, cuddly adorable little critters. I would occasionally let them run around a bit when my mother was at work. And of course, one got away from me. Thankfully, my brother helped me look for him. He had somehow dug his way into the couch. My brother flipped the couch and took off the back cover enough that I could grab him. I don’t believe my mother ever found out! I need to thank my brother the next time we chat.

Can you imagine a wind turbine blade the length of a football field Kathleen? That could be misinformation. I could not confirm this football field sized turbine blade length on line Kathleen. China has the largest wind turbines in the world. Then it took me in “circles”. I too had a Hamster get away and I never found him or her. Smiles with thanks for your support Kathleen. Cap and Patti
