National Pet Day is April 11.

NATIONAL PET DAY..

Pets. I have one favorite “Pet” story and it has to do with the word “Pet” itself.

The nation of India was colonized by the British and so the English language is certainly a “strong second language” that is spoken all over India.

During my first trip to India, a lizard (there are a lot of them all over India) and I sort of became friends. How on this good earth does a lizard become a friend. He (or she and there are many variations to male / female lizards) did not mind me touching him. He would actually get on the top of my head and spend time up there looking around (I suppose). 

One day a local janitor /  house cleaner at the YMCA where I stayed when in New Delhi, saw my pet lizard and asked me about it.

I said “This is my pet.”

He replied .. “Pet??”. What is a “Pet??”.

I.. Could.. Not.. Tell.. Him.. In.. A.. Clear.. Simple.. Way..

So? I looked it up in my little pocket dictionary.

Pet. An animal companion. 

My friend got it immediately!

Onward.

Before I get to NATIONAL TODAY PET DAY, surfing the internet on my own, I found the below..

38% of people like their pets more than their partners: This finding suggests a strong preference for the pet over the romantic partner.
51% of pet owners consider their pets part of the family: This indicates a deep emotional connection and the perception of pets as important family members.
78% of singles would choose their pet over their partner.

NATIONAL (TODAY) PET DAY..

If you’re a pet owner, you know there’s not a day that goes by that you don’t celebrate your animal companion! So hug your hedgehog, bond with your bunny, and cut your kitty some catnip! That critter makes you happy — and that’s not all. Over the past 10 years, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has been a partner in research to determine the physical and mental benefits of having a pet. It turns out that not only can pets steal our hearts, but they also contribute to overall cardiovascular health by lowering cortisol, cholesterol, and blood pressure levels.

Colleen Paige, animal welfare advocate and pet and family lifestyle expert, founded National Pet Day in 2006 to celebrate the joy pets can bring to us. But she also wanted to bring attention to the ongoing needs of many pets of all kinds waiting in shelters to be adopted. She encouraged people who want purebred dogs and cats to contact rescue organizations instead of going to a breeder. “Don’t shop! Adopt!” has become the holiday motto.

I grew up with pet dogs. One, Wavy, a female tri-color Collie mix, had four litters of puppies. I also had several Hamsters that I really enjoyed. Then I had a German Shepard. Then, not one but, two Doberman Pinchers. Finally my travels just shut down my having any kind of pet.

Patti also grew up with a Cocker Spaniel named “Inky”.  Later, she had a Cat named “Tom Cat”. Then a long time companion cat she named “Puff”. When “Puff” passed away in 2003, that was THAT for us with pets.

Gullible had a Pet Parrot (Mexican Double Yellow-Headed Green Amazon parrot pigeon) named Pablo, for almost thirty years. He passed away in October of 2016.
