Amazon told me that I read 91 e-books last year, those being books I got through Kindle and Kindle Unlimited. Most of them were free through my Kindle Unlimited subscription which costs $120 a year, and most, but certainly not all, of those were from British writers. With Kindle Unlimited, you can buy books for say, $1.99, or borrow them, which 20 titles allowed to be borrowed at a time.

Some, from authors I really like, I bought for the full ebook prices, which are about $8 to 10 cheaper than the hard-bound copies.

Some I found through BookBub, a free service that emails me every day about ebook bargains in my chosen genres on Amazon and other platforms.

I’m guessing that ebooks are of substantially less cost to publishers. Editors? Perhaps. Copy checks? Software programs do much of that.

There is no need for a printing press, no packaging or delivery costs to wholesalers. So, when they sell a new release at close to the price of hardbound or paperback, they make money. The authors, not so much.

I also have Amazon Prime at $140 a year, which gives me a vast array of movies, TV shows, sports, etc., to stream, as well as free shipping. Shipping to Alaska, as you know, is expensive. Worth the price of Prime alone.
