MAY 5, 26.. SLEEP APNEA.. HAND WASHING..
Today we have a “Bingo” in terms of a NATIONAL TODAY Holidays..

Sleep Apnea – My Story
Sleep apnea is a disorder in which a person’s breathing repeatedly stops and starts while they are asleep.
Symptoms of sleep apnea include snoring, insomnia, fatigue, drowsiness, dry mouth, sore throat, crankiness, difficulty concentrating, gasping or choking after suddenly waking, headaches, depression, night sweats, and sexual dysfunction.
Some of these symptoms may go unnoticed by the person suffering from sleep apnea but might be noticed by the individual’s bed partner.
In May of 2007, Patti and I were in Royal Oak, Michigan. Prior to leaving Alaska to make our trip back to Royal Oak, I had been having very unpleasant and bothersome “feelings” with my heart!
They were very hard to describe BUT they were very concerning. So much so that I saw my Anchorage Doctor before we left and asked him, “If I go to to an Emergency Room(ER), what do I say about my heart to get attention?” He did a check of my heart saying to me, “I don’t hear any issues with your heart Cap.”
Back we flew to Royal Oak in the greater Detroit Metro Area. Within a few days I said to Patti.. “We are going out to the Emergency Room at Beaumont Hospital.”
Now I know what to say to an ER staffer. You say two words .. “My Heart”. In a New York Minute you have an I.V. drip in your arm with a blood thinner and a lot of ER staffers asking you a lot of questions !!
I was admitted to Beaumont Hospital !!
For three days I was examined from top to bottom. I did an incredible stress treadmill test. They couldn’t believe how well I did.
On the third day I was told, “We don’t know what is going on BUT we find absolutely nothing wrong with your heart !!”
Mike Buchal was my “Lead ER Doctor”. As he slowly walked to the door of my hospital room to fill out my discharge papers, a very pensive Mike Buchal turned to Patti and said, “Does Cap snore?”
Patti said, “Oh Yes he does!!”
Mike said, “I am going to order a Sleep Study!”
Mike may have either saved my life, or added a decade or two or three to it.
After my sleep study was over, I said to the staff.. “I guess I don’t have any sleep issues. I slept great last night!”
An “Apnea” is when you stop breathing for 10 seconds up to a minute. They are very hard on your heart which stops beating when you stop breathing then resumes breathing.
“Cap you had one hundred and thirty eight (138) apneas last night. This is extremely hard on your heart.”
Since late May 2007 I have been using a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine.
A Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine is a device used to treat sleep apnea by delivering a steady, gentle stream of pressurized air through a mask, keeping the airway open during sleep.
There you have my Sleep Apnea Story.
Not once, not one time ever, during the past nineteen (19) years, has Patti tried wearing my CPAP Mask even for a few seconds.

SLEEP APNEA AWARENESS DAY ..
Sleep Apnea Awareness Day is observed annually on May 5. This holiday, as its name reveals, is centered on creating awareness about sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that affects a person’s breathing during sleep. This disorder was discovered fairly recently and is not well-known to many people. Many people suffering from sleep apnea may not be aware that the condition exists. Therefore, Sleep Apnea Awareness Day helps to create widespread awareness and provide useful information to people.
According to research, sleep is so important that a person is more likely to die from sleep deprivation than from food deprivation.

HAND HYGIENE..
Many years ago, our Son Robb, brought to our attention the World Health Organization proper hand washing technique.
What we wonder will this NATIONAL TODAY Holiday tell us?

We are celebrating World Hand Hygiene Day on May 5th.
There are several deadly and dangerous diseases caused by microorganisms all around us. They are all trying to get inside us in one way or the other, which could easily happen through our hands.
Hand hygiene is the best defense against such microbial attacks.
Around 80% of disease-causing germs are transmitted through our hands.
Our hands spread 1,000 times more germs when they are damp.
Understanding this, the World Health Organization (WHO) launched a campaign to spread the importance of hand hygiene in healthcare.

Over And Out..
Cap and Patti
I remember when (a few years ago because I was still working and you were traveling) you posted something about hand washing. I printed it out and posted it in the bathroom at work because it came from a reliable source and it was a quick way to wash. (I think it had come from the world health organization.) The thing I remember most about it is washing the back of your hand with the palm if your other hand. I still do that.
I like twirling your thumb while you hold it with your other hand, rubbing the ends of your fingers in your soapy palms, inter lacing your fingers and moving your hands, all interesting and very good. Not one time, never, at the height of Covid-19, did we ever see one word about World Health Organizations hand washing method. Not one word ever. Cap
