AUG 4, 19 .. A GOOD REPORT ABOUT THE FLOODING AND THE DAM IN BAYKALSK

August 7th UPDATE : The situation in Baykalsk appears to have been resolved.

From August 16th to 18th, I am scheduled to attend a Convention down in Baykalsk, here in the Southernmost part of the Irkutsk Oblast, of Russian Siberia.

A closer view.

In the above and below maps, the small red balloons to the right in each map point to Lake Baikal.

As I mentioned in my Post of yesterday..

https://babakaps.net/?p=36676

I raised a red-warning-flag about flooding and the safety of a Dam down in the Baykalsk area.

To put my mind-at-ease, I received the below e-mail this morning:

Hi Cap..

Of course we know about the flood in Baikalsk.

Now it has already ended and is not expected again.

Hotels work and book rooms for our members

Water in the rivers has already fallen.

Only the city authorities, who are repairing roads, bridges and water supply networks, have problems.

This will not affect us.

We continue to prepare as before.

So everything is going according to plan.

You and my wife and I will go by minibus.

So be calm. We are calm about natural anomalies.

Yesterday, there was even an earthquake on Olkhon Island, but no one was worried about us.

This is not a reason to change our plans.

Last night we had a tremendous, monsoon-like, rain storm with loud thunder and some lightning strikes. This did nothing to calm my concerns about floods and dams failing.

The Convention is still just under two weeks away so..

We shall see what we shall see.

Over And Out..

By The Way, speaking of Baykalsk, if you go to blogspot by clicking the below link, you will see photos of the..

A little ‘chit chat’ with Patti :

Again yesterday evening, as I have been doing, I went to the Angara River to relax and ‘sit with you’ as the sun set and nightfall commenced. Patti, I still have not seen one single freight train across the river. Yes, I have seen some passenger and suburban commuter trains, but not one of the long freight trains. I wish I knew how to find out about this situation.

How very strange that you have not been seeing freight trains across the river from our river walk. While I was there, we were seeing more freight trains than passenger trains. One of those things we are not able to ask the locals about with the language barrier . . . hmmm. Smiles anyway, and love. Patti

The inability to fully speak and read and write the language really does affect us in so many ways doesn’t it? The total absence of trains has got to have something to do with the serious flooding and the fact some major bridges are out on the major transcontinental road. You KNOW that the freight is still moving. They must have some alternate routes. Smiles and Love .. Cap

Hope weather permits you to make the Convention – big fun. Ginny & I have a Service Commit. @ the AZ State Conference – Sept.13-16. That will be held here @ the Riverside Hotel in Laughlin. We are also on a River Cities Roundup Committee – that also will be in Riverside Hotel, in mid January. All is good here, I will head up to Michigan Aug. 20 for a 2 week visit. Cap – I am glad you guys are out of Hong Kong, I think all will be ok there, but best to let it quiet down before visiting again – just imho Vaya con Dios – from Mohave Desert.
