Now .. Taa Daa..

THE WHITE RAVEN

I don’t know if any of you are particularly interested in Ravens. Living in the semi remote interior of Alaska (Manley Hot Springs) I became aware of the importance held by our Alaskan Natives of Ravens.

Whoa

I “googled” White Raven and found out that interest in White Ravens goes back centuries.

How rare is a white raven?

A bird has a roughly 1 in 30,000 chance of being born with the condition. This makes the White Raven a true oddity of the sky and worthy of the pomp and circumstance shown to them.

What does it mean if you see a white raven?

It’s an omen, or it’s a curse, or it’s a blessing, but mainly it’s some sort of change is about in the world.

Whether it’s good or bad depends on the tradition. In Greek mythology, the white raven is associated with the god Apollo.

In Haida tradition in northwest Canada, a white raven helped bring the sun, moon and stars to earth, but turned black when it brought fire to humans.

Anchorage’s white raven becomes a local legend as a tracked trickster.

Ah, White Raven, the Belle of Spenard. She has her favorite haunts, that being Spenard Roadhouse where the Dumpster offers up gourmet treats, Chilkoot Charlie’s, and the Windmill on Spenard Road.

She is not completely white, not an albino. Instead she is leucistic and has beautiful blue eyes. Hatched last summer near Kenai, her instincts and possibly her parents, took her to Anchorage and the all-you-can-eat Dumpster buffets.

I was in Anchorage recently on my bi-monthly grocery trip (yes, every two months), and as it was a warm, sunny, blue-sky day, I went looking for the blue-eyed star attraction in Anchorage, that being a leucistic raven called White Raven.

I scouted her favorite haunts–Chilkoot Charlie’s, the Spenard Roadhouse, and the Windmill. I checked the Facebook page especially designed to let people know of her last location.

I prowled through her favorite old neighborhoods in Spenard where large snow and ice berms have reduced the already narrow two lane streets to single rough, icy lanes. I looked for the crowd of adoring paparazzi that appear wherever she is.

Truly, though, it’s difficult to spot a white raven against all the snow, especially when her favorite spots are the Dumpsters tucked away out of sight behind buildings.

Eventually, my nervousness about driving my truck through narrow passages in residential areas overcame my desire to see the Belle of Spenard. I did see a bunch of pigeons, a magpie, and six black ravens (though they were farther south than White Raven’s haunts.

I gave up. Someday, I hope.

In the meanwhile, I hope the best for her, hope her black raven companions, who appear quite taken with her, protect her against the other black ravens who aren’t smitten. I hope she comes to no harm. I hope she (and of course I’m guessing about her sex) lives long and multiplies, despite all the pizza and Tater Tots she consumes.

Awesome!! Thanks for sharing the photo I sent you Cap! My spirit soared when I saw he/she/it perched on the light post just off Spenard and W 27th. My footfall was much lighter for the experience. Cool sight on a beautiful day.

Awesome photo Chris. Absolutely, totally, awesome. Then, for you to realize just what you were seeing, and seize the moment and snap a photo, that too is a step beyond the beyond Chris. How many people would completely miss seeing The Belle of Spenard (to quote Gullibe). Thanks again for sharing your very special photo with Patti so we could share it with our followers here on dotnet Chris. We could hardly wait for you to see this Post! Cap and Patti
