Two months ago today, on Thursday, August the 8th, snap your fingers quick, part of our world blew up sky high when our website here on dotnet was shut down by our Hosting Service Midphase . I know. “Get over it!”

It’s “official”. Kathleen coined the word for what we have been calling our very own “Warrior Weed”. We now know it is a Birch Sapling and NOT a weed!

You can take that sapling out of your condo area and plant it elsewhere, you know. Then you can visit your very own tree on your walks.

DYSLEXIA..

I have Dyslexia. So I certainly identify with this “Day”.

Dyslexia Day is observed on October 8 each year.

World Dyslexia Day raises awareness about Dyslexia and what can be done to manage it.

Caps Definition .. I will look at letters or words and reverse them.

Get it? I am looking at the word Unite and yet I actually see Untie!

When I was in the 4th or 5th grade in Elementary School, due to learning difficulties in school, I was about to be “set back” one full grade. Instead (and I have no idea how it came to happen) I was diagnosed (this was year 1945 or so) with Dyslexia and I worked intensely with a wonderful remedial teacher, Cally Gartrell, that I will never forget.

To this day, to this moment, dyslexia is a fact in my life that I have learned to deal with. 

From The Mayo Clinic. Dyslexia is a learning disorder that involves difficulty reading due to problems identifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to letters and words (decoding). Also called a reading disability, dyslexia is a result of individual differences in areas of the brain that process language.

Dyslexia is not due to problems with intelligence, hearing or vision. Most children with dyslexia can succeed in school with tutoring or a specialized education program. Emotional support also plays an important role.

Though there’s no cure for dyslexia, early assessment and intervention result in the best outcome. Sometimes dyslexia goes undiagnosed for years and isn’t recognized until adulthood, but it’s never too late to seek help.

What many of us take for granted, such as reading and writing fluently, is an area of struggle for those who have dyslexia. Dyslexia is a common learning disorder that affects a person’s ability to read and write properly. Dyslexics are often unable to read quickly and write without committing errors. Dyslexics might struggle with reading, writing, vocabulary, and tasks that require hand-eye coordination.

Dyslexia was first identified by German physician Oswald Berkhan in 1881. It was named ‘dyslexia’ by ophthalmologist Rudolph Berlin six years after the disorder was identified. Berkhan discovered the existence of the developmental reading disorder while analyzing the case of a young boy who had reported severe difficulties in learning to read and write properly. Since the patient was otherwise intellectually and physically sound, Berkhan was especially intrigued by his case.

Dyslexia cannot be treated by medication.

 Patients often need therapy and innovative methods for learning.

The word has Greek roots. ‘Dys’ means ‘inadequate’ and ‘lexis’ means ‘words’ or ‘language.’
