Feast or Famine..

Some days there are several NATIONAL TODAY Holidays that Patti and I can comment about from actual experience.

Other days there will not be one single Holiday that Patti and I can personally comment about from actual experience.

Yes, we know, we ARE repeating ourselves.

Each and every single day NATIONAL TODAY has extremely interesting (to many people) Holidays but which Patti and I cannot comment upon.

This has has been the situation the past two days.

However, the past two days, we have known for sure that today, Monday the 25th of May, 2026, would be Memorial Day for all of us.

The Geeks of the World is a fun and interesting topic because I, Your Captain, is an Automobile Racing Geek (along with more than one other life interest).

Today we had twenty eight (28) NATIONAL TODAY Holidays to consider.

Today is the one hundred forty fifth (145) day of this year with two hundred and twenty days remaining.

We hope that just maybe, we have familiarized some of you with NATIONAL TODAY Holidays.

MEMORIAL DAY..

“Memorial Day” and “Decoration Day” are two names for the same U.S. federal holiday, which occurs annually on the last Monday in May.

Decoration Day, began after the Civil War as a time to place flowers and flags on the graves of fallen soldiers. Over 620,000 soldiers died in the four-year conflict.

General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic (an organization of Union veterans) would eventually select May 30, 1868, as a day to pay tribute to the fallen.

By 1890, each Northern state had made Decoration Day an official holiday.

In the South, the states continued to honor their dead on separate days until after the First World War.

In 1968, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act was passed by Congress, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May to create a three-day weekend for federal employees. The change went into effect in 1971. Moreover, the same law declared Memorial Day a federal holiday.

Memorial Day is a holiday steeped in American history and tradition.

Memorial Day, as we know it, is a strictly American holiday.

But other countries around the world also honor their fallen military forces with a day of remembrance. I personally saw this in Russia. 

The last Monday in May serves as a time to honor those who died while fighting in the U.S. Armed Forces.

As we have already pointed out above, Memorial Day actually began as “Decoration Day.”

By the end of the 19th century, Memorial Day ceremonies were being held on May 30 throughout the nation. States passed proclamations, and the Army and Navy adopted rules for proper observance at their facilities.

GEEK PRIDE DAY..

It sometimes happens on NATIONAL TODAY. Two Holidays we enjoy are listed together.

Decoration Day Number 6 was accompanied by Geek Pride Day Number 7.

What is a Geek? 

Noun
A Geek is a person who is an enthusiast or expert in something. A person who is knowledgeable about, and obsessively interested in, a particular subject, especially one that is technical or of special interest.

Verb
To engage in, or discuss, technical or computer-related tasks obsessively or with great attention to detail.
“We all Geeked out for a bit and exchanged ICQ/MSN/AOL/website information”

What is so bad about being, or being considered, a Geek?

Come On! We don’t say it but a lot of us are “Sports Geeks”. How about “Photographic Geeks”. Or “Literary Geeks”. Or “Library Geeks”. Or.. Or.. Or..

Geek Pride Day is celebrated on May 25 every year.

May 25, 1977, is when the science fiction cult classic film “Star Wars” premiered. It’s the perfect day to celebrate Geek Pride Day.

This international holiday promotes the culture, hobbies, and interests of Geeks worldwide.

Geek culture has broken away from the old stereotypes of socially awkward tech nerds.

At one time, being called a Geek wasn’t a good thing. Geeks were seen as anti-social, awkward, unpopular members of society who took comfort in the world of make-believe.

That is no longer the situation.

Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos embody this Geek culture best of all. They are the poster boys of Geeks everywhere, inspiring admiration and envy in equal measures.
