OCT 9, 26.. WORLD POST DAY..

Hello NATIONAL TODAY..

Every October 9th..

World Post Day celebrates the vital role of postal services across the globe.

On October 9, 1874, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) was established as a means of cooperation and regulation amongst its members mail services.

Today it allows mail to flow freely from your mailbox to Timbuktu, and everywhere in between! In 1969, World Post Day was inaugurated at the Tokyo Universal Postal Congress.

As of 2026, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) hosts 192 member countries, making it a truly global organization.

Sending a letter is one of the most iconic acts of showing someone you care.

Iconic is an adjective meaning very famous, popular, and widely recognized as a symbol of a particular time, place, or idea.

Thank your mail carrier if you are able. Yes, many who are working never see their mail carrier even though they come to our residences nearly every day. But if you are able to do so, take the time to say hello and introduce yourself, and thank them for their service.

Personally I “go out of my way” to thank our local letter carrier. I also call several of our Post Office Employees by name as well since we have a Post Office Box there.

A few Tid-Bits..

The U.S Postal Service processes more than 5,000 pieces of mail every second.

The USPS receives no tax dollars for operating expenses.

ZIP stands for Zone Improvement Plan, begun in 1963 by the USPS.

The U.S. Postal Service has no official motto. However it is often associated with a quote from the Ancient Greek historian Herodotus: “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.” The quote is a fitting tribute to postal workers the world over who are tasked with delivering our most precious correspondence.

I was a substitute mail carrier for our local contract carrier for many years. I delivered mail in Moose Pass, carried bulk mail to Hope and delivered locally there, and delivered mail in Cooper Landing,

A mule and I carried a satchel of mail from the bottom of the Grand Canyon to the top.

And, I even helped unload mail from a boat at Halibut Cove and carried it into the tiny floating post office.
